Dishonored Developer Arkane Studios Hiring For Unannounced Project

Following the shocking announcement yesterday that Microsoft would be acquiring Zenimax Media and Bethesda, many are likely wondering what new exclusive games will be coming to the Xbox in the next few years. While, of course, many are speculating that The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield could be coming exclusively to the Series X, it’s also worth considering what new IPs could be born on the console through this landmark deal.

It seems a Bethesda studio could be working on one of these new IPs, with Arkane Studios recently posting some job listings for an unannounced AAA project. Reported by MauroNL on Twitter, these listings seem to confirm that this mysterious project will feature an online component, with it also allegedly offering live-service elements as well.

According to MauroNL, two of the three listings for openings at Arkane Lyons cite that the branch “is seeking talented Engine Programmers to join us for a new unannounced project.” It seems whatever this new game is might potentially feature a shift in engine from previous Arkane Studios releases as well, with the lead tech animator position asking for experience using Unreal Engine 4. As MauroNL points out, “The lead tech animator listing asks for UE4 experience which could indicate an engine shift (Arkane previously used idTech and Source Engine hybrids),”  meaning an engine switch could be on the cards. The most interesting element is left until last, however, with the server engine listing requiring the applicant to have “expertise with network and online features.”

It seems to imply that, whatever Arkane is working on, it’s more multiplayer-focused than anything in the studio’s portfolio thus far. It also requests that the applicant has “experience in a ‘Live’ environment (ongoing support of a product after launch),” implying that the game could follow in the footsteps of titles like Destiny, Anthem, or Marvel’s AvengersOf course, it’s hard to speculate too much on such brief details, but it definitely seems as though Arkane could be gearing up to ship a more online-focused title in the years to come. It would certainly be a change for the company, considering its prior games.

Of course, it is something the developer is toying around with more in its upcoming stealth-action game Deathloopwith players games able to be raided by an online enemy who’s sole purpose is to prevent them from assassinating their target. As for Deathloop itself, it seems like an ambitious next step for the minds behind Dishonored and Prey, allowing for the studio’s seminal, immersive sandbox gameplay to shine in a stylish, 80s inspired world. Despite yesterday’s news, it’ll be coming to the PlayStation 5 and PC next year, with Microsoft honoring Sony’s exclusivity deal with Bethesda.
