Destiny 2‘s newest expansion, Beyond Light, will release in a little over a month. Lately, Bungie has been providing a steady stream of news about the release, and today’s destination trailer revealed the return of Variks from Destiny 1.
While Destiny 2: Beyond Light‘s main destination, Europa, and its protagonists have been shown extensively in previous trailers, Variks was kept hidden from the marketing material until now. He was the first alien vendor and ally to be introduced in Destiny, and he originally overlooked the Prison of Elders activity.
Today, players got the chance to see and hear this old friend for the first time in years. He narrates over the new trailer and the player’s actions, most likely indicating that he will play a significant part in Guardians’ journeys across Europa. This also confirms that the appearance of Variks will be physical in Beyond Light, and not just referred like in Forsaken‘s Warden of Nothing Strike.
His new attire is also showcased, which answers some questions while opening the door to others. Firstly, Variks seems to not have forgone his old ways, as he is still wearing the House of Judgement tabard — the attire for a Fallen faction which he lead. However, he might’ve made new allegiances, as the paint on his helmet reflects the color scheme of the new faction of Fallen, House of Darkness, that players will face on Europa.
Variks notably went missing after the opening events of the Forsaken campaign, and he was only recently mentioned in a lore entry describing his contact with the House of Darkness. It wasn’t certain whether he was a prisoner or ally to them at the time, or whether he would play a part in the new campaign.
Prince Uldren had also previously gone missing from the Destiny universe, and his return was teased during the Warmind expansion’s lore months before Forsaken was unveiled with him as a major character. Today’s reveal for Variks might not have been a surprise to keen-eyed players, but many will likely welcome his return.
Whether Variks will once again take on the role of an activity handler is still up in the air. He might help lead a horde-mode event on Europa, similar to Escalation Protocol, or he may even become the second Fallen vendor in the game, thus strengthening the alliance between humanity and Eliksni. However, it’s more likely Variks will not return to the Reef, as he is on bad terms with many parties on the Tangled Shore such as The Spider, Destiny 2‘s other Fallen vendor.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light will be available on November 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The PS5 version should be available November 12.
