Among the many gaming rumors to have spread this year, the one regarding a remaster of the Mass Effect trilogy is arguably one of the biggest and one that continues to look more and more likely. Ever since the rumor started, there has been growing evidence to suggest that it’s real, with the latest being a leaked listing from a Portuguese retailer.
What got a lot of people excited was that the listing also suggested that the remaster would release on the Nintendo Switch. The Mass Effect series has been notably absent from Nintendo’s hardware, with the only exception being a re-release of Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U. While that version was received relatively well by fans and critics, it being the only entry available meant Nintendo fans weren’t able to enjoy the full experience of the trilogy, where choices made in the first two games would carry over to the third.
Unfortunately, this may no longer be the case. Journalist and insider Jeff Grubb, who was among the first to initially report on the rumored Mass Effect trilogy, has now stated that the game will not be coming to the Switch. He shared this during a recent GamesBeat video whilst discussing unannounced games that he was excited for, with the Mass Effect remaster being the main one. Later on, he suggested that he will have news regarding it sometime next week, though whether it’s related to an official announcement from EA is unknown.
During a separate Xbox Expansion Pass podcast, Grubb also claimed that the remaster is titled Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. This all certainly sounds believable and Grubb has been a reputable source of insider info in the past, though as always, it’s best to wait for an official announcement from EA, which will hopefully happen soon, as it’s supposedly meant to be releasing this October.
Even if the game doesn’t release for Switch, there are still reasons to be excited for a remastered Mass Effect trilogy. Aside from being a convenient way for old fans and new players to experience the series, it could also help the series’ reputation after Mass Effect: Andromeda. Despite receiving average to positive reviews, it was nowhere near as popular as its predecessors and quickly became a source of mockery for its technical issues, such as “freaky” facial animations.
Developer Bioware is currently busy working on the next instalment of its Dragon Age series. While details are still incredibly scarce, fans were recently treated to some very early footage and concept art, which was the first bit of actual news about the game in years.
