Between its exciting lineup of games, innovative DualSense controller, and advanced next-gen features, the PlayStation 5 looks set to hit the ground running when it launches in November. The general expectation is that the PS5 will sell well throughout the next few years, but one analyst took it a step further by suggesting that Sony’s next console has the potential to effectively break all the sales records in the process.
The thought that the PS5 might be a major money-maker for Sony is hardly a radical notion. All four of the previous PlayStations rank among the top ten best-selling consoles of all time, after all. It goes without saying that Sony has successfully built up a massive fanbase over the years, and it’s doubtful that even the situation with COVID-19 (plus the current mess that is PS5 pre-orders) will do much to hurt the PS5’s chances of continuing the PlayStation brand’s success in the long run.
And while the console isn’t even out yet, Japanese analyst firm Rakuten Securities (as shared by Takashi Mochizuki on Twitter) is already predicting that the PS5 may very well become the best-selling console ever, with sales that could surpass 200 million units. That optimism extends to Rakuten’s prediction for the PS5’s launch window, as its report goes on to claim that the console will sell somewhere between 12-20 million units by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2021, a step up from a previous prediction of 10 million.
To put that lifetime sales prediction in perspective, 200 million would be over 40 million units more than the current record holder, the PS2, and nearly twice the amount of units the PS4 has sold in its lifetime. It’s a number no console has come close to reaching yet, and yet Rakuten isn’t the only one that thinks the PS5 has a chance of at least surpassing the PS2, as previous estimates of the PS5’s lifetime sales have ranged between 120-170 million.
One thing that will really help its chances is the fact that the PS5’s standard model will cost the same as its main competitor, the Xbox Series X, while its Digital Edition won’t be much more expensive than the budget-friendly Xbox Series S. Add to that what many consider a stronger lineup of exclusive titles, and the momentum Microsoft lost during the Xbox One’s early years, and a lot of experts are confident that PS5 sales could double the Xbox Series’.
While the PS5’s lifetime sales have the potential to break records, other analysts believe that the PS5 and Xbox Series will fail to dominate holiday sales when they launch, due to factors like reported console shortages brought on by COVID-19 and growing competition from the Nintendo Switch. Whether or not this will actually be the case will be revealed once the next generation kicks off in a few weeks.
The PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, and will launch everywhere else on November 19.
