Elf is undoubtedly a Christmas classic, destined to be played in the holiday months on every channel available until holiday months no longer exist. A hilarious and heartwarming film staring Will Ferrell as the lovable but obnoxious ‘Buddy,’ the film over-performed at the box office and rumors of a sequel have sprung up from time to time, but nothing ever materialized. A recent interview with James Caan, who played the curmudgeonly book publisher and Buddy’s biological father Walter, may shed a little light on why the property never got a second shot at the big screen.
It has long been assumed that, much like many other Will Ferrell movies, the star was simply uninterested in returning to previous characters and ideas. However, during a discussion with 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, James Cann indicated that a sequel was closer to being reality than fans might expect. “We were gonna do it, and I thought ‘Oh my God, I finally have a franchise movie. I can make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.’ The director and Will didn’t get along very well. Will wanted to do it, and he didn’t want the director. He had it in his contract. It was one of those things.”
So it would seem that there is some beef between Jon Favreau, who directed the original film, and Will Ferrell. Though Favreau has expressed a willingness to return to the property at some point, Ferrell has been adamant when asked that he has no interest, which suggests that Ferrell was the one annoyed with Favreau rather than the other way around. Neither individual has any particular reputation for being difficult to work with, so it may just be a case of personality clash or an unfortunate conflict arising on set in terms of priorities and direction.
It’s entirely possible that they simply didn’t work together as well as either wanted, and as a result, haven’t made much effort to reunite. That is to say, it’s still entirely possible to enjoy Elf as a wonderful holiday movie that was very important for the careers of both men, even if we may never see Buddy take to the silver screen again.
