Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Players Find Major Issue With Scorestreaks

With Treyarch back in control of multiplayer for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, a handful of players got to go hands on with the recent changes made to the popular modes this past weekend during the Alpha test. One of the biggest changes from Modern Warfare is the return of the scorestreak system, which lets players keep their points even after a death. However, the latest iteration of the system seems to be confusing players and raising a few issues with exactly how it is supposed to work.

Inside Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, scorestreaks act a little differently than longtime players may remember. While points remain intact after death, Treyarch has also added a streak element to it where more points are awarded to players who manage to perform multiple actions while staying alive. Attempting to give all players an opportunity to earn rewards for playing, this new system increases the points earned for doing things consecutively, such as killing three enemies in one life rather than getting three with a death in between them.

However, Call of Duty subReddit users have begun to point out that this system doesn’t work quite as well as hoped. For players who prefer to play the objective rather than hunt for kills, the scorestreak system doesn’t appear to be quite as rewarding and may even discourage objective play. As players discovered, the score multiplier only seems to apply for consecutive kills rather than consecutive objective plays such as grabbing dog tags in Kill Confirmed. If a player is on a killstreak, they’re more likely to pursue other enemies to keep that point streak alive rather than stopping to help grab an objective which isn’t as rewarding.

With a flat rate of 100 points earned for playing an objective, one Reddit user named JDFive has offered a suggestion to improve the system based on the multiplayer mode. In a mode like Domination, capturing an enemy flag could add a x1 score multiplier. In Kill Confirmed, grabbing every third tag could enable a x2 score multiplier. For a mode like Hardpoint, simply staying on the objective would earn a x1 multiplier every 5 seconds. Doing this will help players earn enough score to call in some of the biggest scorestreaks available.

While some seem to just be happy at getting any points for playing the objective, the post has seen a number of likes already. It’s unknown if Treyarch will adjust this system prior to the game’s November launch, though the studio is already embroiled in another player controversy with skill-based matchmaking. While many fans are loudly objecting to this controversial feature being utilized, Treyarch is defending the decision by reminding players that SBMM isn’t new and has been used by every previous game in the series.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be available November 13th on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will also be available.
