Expect Big Prices For Custom Nvidia RTX 3090 Graphics Cards

Few gamers expect the latest technology to be cheap, but Nvidia’s pricing of its new gigantic GeForce RTX 3090 flagship card surprised many people. At $1499, the Founders Edition card is certainly not cheap, but an accidental listing by hardware site Newegg US reveals that many custom cards from Nvidia’s hardware partners are going to be priced considerably higher.

Redditor MRizkBV spotted the listings, which detailed eleven new Nvidia RTX 3090 cards from four major hardware partners like Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, and MSI. The two highest priced cards were listed for an eye watering $1799 each, the Asus ROG Strix OC Edition and EVGA FTW3 Ultra Gaming, while another three cards were priced between $1600 and $1730.

Only one of the cards listed matched the price point of Nvidia’s Founders Edition RTX 3090, with the Asus TUF Gaming 3090 coming in at $1499. While these listings did not include cards by manufacturers such as Galax and Palit that are known for lower cost options, it was also missing some of the announced top end models, such as the EVGA Kingpin and EVGA Hydro Copper. The former is designed for high overclocking potential, while the latter uses a water block to boost cooling.

As with all custom hardware partners, the graphics cards will offer a range of stock and overclocked specifications, with the more expensive models usually packing faster speeds and higher quality cooling systems to maximize performance from the cutting edge GPU as quietly as possible. The highest overclock speed listed is an 1800MHz boost clock on the $1799 EVGA card, which is 105MHz faster than Nvidia’s Founders Edition card. Leaked gaming benchmarks for the Founders Edition RTX 3090 have been seen as underwhelming given the huge price, however, even if accurate, the performance will likely improve as games are more tightly optimized for the new hardware.

The RTX 3090 is going to be pricey regardless of which version gamers get, although with RTX 3080 models being hawked by scalpers for up to $5000 following a difficult launch, paying $1799 for an overclocked version of the fastest gaming card around doesn’t seem quite as extravagant. Unfortunately the expectation among gamers is that the RTX 3090 launch will also result in scalpers selling at ridiculous prices, meaning that gamers hoping to get anywhere near retail price for the latest hardware are probably best to be patient.

Waiting makes even more sense given there are further releases on the horizon, with AMD announcing its RDNA 2 powered RX 6000 Series on October 28, and Nvidia being expected to announce versions of the RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 with double the memory of the launch cards, shortly after.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 will be available from September 24.
