Gamers Share Memes After Chaotic PS5, Xbox Series X Pre-Orders

The PS5 and Xbox Series X both released pre-orders recently. Neither of them went smoothly, despite the efforts of players, the developer companies, or retailers. The question of which next gen console should players get is now replaced with which one they will be able to get at all in the near future.

The debacle began with the PS5 pre-orders, which were not announced well. The issue was then compounded by Walmart announcing it would let players pre-order ahead of the announced date. This prompted other retailers to question if they would stick to Sony’s proscribed date, and chaos ensued. While the Xbox Series X and S have not had exactly the same problem, scalpers have still gotten to most of those consoles’ pre-orders as well. In short, there are almost no pre-orders left, and players are not happy.

With no way to get at the consoles they had been waiting for for so long, many players responded with memes. There have already been memes about the price of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but these elevate things to a new level. Here are some of the funniest and saltiest memes out there concerning the pre-order scalping.

The full backlash to Xbox’s Tweet about “record breaking demand” cannot be far off. In fact, it’s already begun. Just as someone has mislabeled this Xbox console and Walmart mispriced its PS5 pre-orders, so too will Xbox’s statement no doubt prove to have been mistimed.

This one is a pretty simple mockup highlighting the hypocrisy of the PS5’s tagline. Straightforward and to the point, it’s still an accurate situation. In fact, so many people jumped into GameStop’s website to do the same for the Xbox Series X/S as the PS5 that there was a que to enter the website itself.

This is a question that still plagues many. The awful truth is that many players simply won’t get a PS5 pre-order at this point. Players who wanted to pre-order the digital PS5 edition are even more out of luck, but very few have walked away happy.

This is a rare insight into what was going on behind the scenes. It looks like not all retailers were supplied equally, and were not supplied with very much at that. This fact was not made available online, only to players visiting physical retailers. With the dangers of COVID-19 still rampant, that was a much smaller percentage of players than normal.

But hey, at least some GameStops had more:

Without any pictures or any jokes, this meme sums up what frustrates people most about buying this gen of consoles. Dan Ryckert, a senior producer with the WWE and former game journalist, reminisces fondly on fighting for a long, hard-held place in line. It really puts into perspective how the very act of purchasing a new system has been twisted into a hoax of what it was thanks to overhype, confusion, and an abuse of passion for video games. It seems undeniable that this was a bad year to release a new console. That’s not Sony or Microsoft’s fault, but the way retailers handled the pre-order buying definitely made things worse.
