Any superhero-based video game from the last decade has included the options for alternate outfits and skins that allow players to choose their favorite costumes from the comics and movies, with the latest release of Marvel’s Avengers following suit while adding a new layer to the fan-favorite feature.
The game features a unique continuity for the Avengers which provided developers with the opportunity to both adapt classic costumes for the game while also creating new versions using the established designs of the characters– which might make it difficult when trying to decide which costume Captain America should wear on your next mission.
10 Stealth
Captain America’s Stealth outfit is a modified version of the main suit he wears during the game, but given the customary darker coloring to draw a bit less attention than the classic red, blue, and white of his more patriotic uniform.
The Stealth outfit is unlockable through the character’s Hero Challenge cards and is a fun darker replacement for Captain America’s regular in-game suit, which left more than a few fans turned off when it was first debuted.
9 Experiment
As fans play through Marvel’s Avengers, various Patterns can be found across the game that can be used in the Fabrication Machine (unlocked after the “Armor Chase” campaign mission) to create random new outfits.
Steve Rogers’ Experiment costume is one of the decipherable patterns that can be created with the Fabrication Machine, which gives Captain America’s test subject outfit his usual color motif, making it even better to run around the map barefoot and shirtless à la the Hulk.
8 Obsidian
When Marvel’s Avengers was released, fans had a few options to choose from that each came with special items and themed outfits for the entire team, with the Deluxe Edition giving the characters a matching Obsidian makeover.
The black, grey, and gold costumes were each tailored to the character’s specific designs, though Captain America’s outfit was dramatically lightened in a beautifully altered costume that looks great alongside the equally-equipped Avengers.
7 Star-Spangled
The Star-Spangled outfit is another product of the Fabrication Machine and features a unique take on Captain America’s patriotic uniform that separates itself from the rest of the character’s outfits with its original design.
The uniform features a bulkier build for the character along with the dynamic color paneling that creates almost an entirely different character if not for the familiar helmet featured in the other outfits.
6 Stark Tech
When the Avengers reform together after the shattering events of A-Day, Iron Man outfits the team with new Stark Tech costumes that update the characters’ with an advanced technological look that works well in some cases.
Captain America’s updated Stark Tech uniform is an advanced take on the body armor of his usual in-game costume that adds more armor while also streamlining the costume, and even equipped the helmet with light-up eyes to further bring Cap into the future of Marvel’s Avengers.
5 Modern
As players progress their characters’ through the game’s various modes and missions, new skills and outfits are unlocked, with Captain America debuting his Modern outfit after reaching a Hero Level of 50.
The Modern outfit is an updated take on the comic costume worn by Steve Rogers during the Secret Empire comic storyline, though that version was later revealed to be a Hydra duplicate of Captain America, giving the costume a dark tarnish in the comics.
4 Arctic Commander
Thanks to some of the unique costume designs in Marvel’s Avengers, fans are able to play through the game in bright new variations of classic or video game costumes, which was part of the appeal of Cap/s dark Stealth outfit.
The Arctic Commander outfit that is unlockable through his Hero Challenge cards features a light version of the actual stealth suit worn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, though it features red and blue accents that reference his original suit while still making this washed-out version pop in-game.
3 Front Line
Players who pre-ordered the game were also given the bonus of Legacy outfits, which redesigned the character’s costumes to reflect their comic book origins, which brought Captain America back to his debut during World War II as one of the allies’ greatest weapons.
This is easily one of the best costumes in the games as it reflects a version of his makeshift wartime costume that appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger, giving the costume a real-world makeover that made sense on the battlefield.
2 Super Soldier
Bucky/Winter Soldier once took over as Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed dead, and he remained in the role after Steve returned. This led him to adopt a new costume and role as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Rogers’ new costume, which also served as the inspiration for the costume that appeared on the big screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is represented by the maskless Super Soldier outfit in Marvel’s Avengers, that gives fans a sleek and modern uniform for the Sentinel of Liberty.
1 Protector
There are a few different costumes that look similar to Captain America’s iconic comic book appearance, but one of the best is the Protector outfit that is available for purchase from the Cosmetic Vendor for the various Fragments collected throughout the game.
While the Legendary Ultimate Patriot outfit follows the comic color scheme a bit closer than the Protector outfit, it’s also heavily embellished with detailing, which makes the armored simplicity of the Protector outfit one of the best costumes for fans looking to play as Marvel’s classic Captain America.
