Toby Haynes who’s worked on Black Mirror, Sherlock and the upcoming Amazon Utopia remake will direct the first three episodes of the untitled Star Wars: Rogue One spin-off focusing on Cassian Andor for Disney+. Haynes replaces Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy who stepped aside due to not wanting to travel during the current COVID-19 pandemic but will still stay on as executive producer and showrunner.
Haynes was already in line to direct further episodes, but being based in the U.K., where the series will be filmed, made him ideal to helm the first three as well. Some of his previous credits include Doctor Who, Brexit: The Uncivil War and the Black Mirror episode USS Callister which went on to win 4 Emmy awards.
The Disney+ spin-off will be a spy thriller set before the events of Rogue One and will see Diego Luna reprise his role as Cassian Andor. Also joining the cast is Alan Tudyk who’ll return as Andor’s droid sidekick K-2SO along with Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller in unspecified roles.
Following the huge success of the first season of The Mandalorian, it seems Disney+ are keen to turn Star Wars into a high end TV franchise with this Rogue One themed spin-off, as well as the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will see Ewan McGregor return to the role. A potential Solo series has also been kicked around. With the cinematic future of Star Wars in doubt, it’s a move that makes sense to keep the series in the public eye and drive subscribers towards Disney+.
In any case, Toby Haynes has a lot of experience directing high end TV so his involvement with the upcoming Rogue One spin-off can only be a good sign.
