Rumor: Metal Gear Solid Remake and More in Development as PS5 Console Exclusives

Now that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has departed from Konami, fans of the action stealth franchise are unsure of what to expect from the series. So far, Konami seems content to just let it lie, but a new rumor suggests that the company may be looking into remaking the original Metal Gear Solid game as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive at some point down the line.

This rumor comes from RedGamingTech, a YouTube channel dedicated to video game hardware. RedGamingTech cites an unnamed source that claims Konami is moving forward with a full-blown Metal Gear Solid remake for PC and PS5. Not only that, but Konami apparently plans on releasing HD remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of LibertyMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PlayStation 5 as well.

It’s hard to imagine a new Metal Gear Solid game without Hideo Kojima at the helm, and so remaking the first Metal Gear Solid seems like a decent way for Konami to continue the franchise without upsetting fans. There are quite a few Metal Gear series games that Konami could potentially bring to the PS5 besides the ones listed by RedGamingTech as well, so it could potentially have years of re-releases to keep fans engaged.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that Konami has re-released old MGS games or remade the original Metal Gear Solid. As some may recall, Konami released a Metal Gear Solid remake for GameCube called The Twin Snakes that included new gameplay elements, story tweaks, and vastly improved visuals. Since a Metal Gear Solid remake already exists, it will be interesting to see how much it has in common with the GameCube and what all changes it will make.

It will definitely be interesting to see if the supposed Metal Gear Solid PS5 remake brings back Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter. Hayter was infamously replaced as Snake’s voice actor for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and while it made sense within the context of the game’s story, it still understandably upset longtime fans of the franchise. Konami has made a number of unpopular decisions in recent years, but bringing back Hayter to voice Solid Snake would definitely earn it some brownie points with disgruntled fans.

Hayter has been brought back to voice Solid Snake in projects that were released after Metal Gear Solid 5, including in a Ford Focus SE commercial as well as in Super Bomberman R, so it would make sense for him to return for the remake. But then again, it’s possible that the Metal Gear Solid PS5 remake doesn’t even exist, and so fans should definitely keep that in mind before they get too excited.

Metal Gear Solid remake is rumored to be in development for PC and PS5.
