No Man’s Sky had a less than perfect launch, with many claiming that the title did not deliver the game that had been promised. Since then, No Man’s Sky has had updates that have significantly improved the game and made it a much more compelling offering. However, it seems that the team behind the game have learned a valuable lesson about setting expectations. Managing Director at Hello Games, Sean Murray, has now discussed how they will approach unveiling new games.
Many feel that the free DLC No Man’s Sky has offered has been some of the best on the market in recent years. Unfortunately, despite its updates, some players did not return to the game because of initial disappointment. The latest No Man’s Sky update has just launched and many are excited by the new mechanics and things to do but while this work is being done the developer is also working on new products. Sean Murray explained why the new project is being kept quiet in comparison to the announcement of other efforts.
Sean Murray discussed how the team at Hello Games would not over-promise again, “I mean, look, we have learned our lesson. We don’t want to start talking about anything too early.” Many fans of the studio and its work will be pleased by this news as expectations did seem to stop No Man’s Sky from reaching its full potential. However, the director did go on to detail some exciting elements of the new project. The director did say that the new project will not be like the most recent collaborative release from the studio, Last Campfire, instead he explained “I would hope that there’s a line between Joe Danger to No Man’s Sky.” With that said, the project should be on a large scale like the space-based game.
The director concluded that “As a studio, we definitely are very focused on doing new, big, ambitious things.” This is evident in the latest update for No Man’s Sky which adds giant worms as well as volcanoes. The developer appears to be working towards better products and with that in mind, it will be interesting to see what game is produced in the future.
Many will appreciate the more reserved approach that the developer is taking and it may lead to more satisfied customers in the long run. After all, previous claims damaged No Man’s Sky and it seems that players would like a more realistic dialogue when the next game is revealed.
No Man’s Sky is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
