The pre-orders for the Xbox Series X went live today, and as expected, it wasn’t easy to snatch one among the hype and thousands of interested consumers. The pre-orders for the Xbox Series X seem to be just as chaotic as the PS5’s, but the Xbox has one additional issue to deal with: its name.
Searches for the Xbox One X, last generation’s Xbox console, went up an astounding 747% today on Amazon. While searching for the brand new next-generation console, many fans may have accidentally searched Xbox One X instead of Xbox Series X. People have been confused about the name since the console was first revealed, and now it seems as though even Microsoft is a bit disoriented.
On an Xbox blog post about Destiny 2: Beyond Light (which will launch on Game Pass), Microsoft called its next-generation console the Xbox One Series X. It is a bit comical that on the day pre-orders go live for the Xbox Series X, Microsoft itself posts a blog with the name mixed up.
Xbox Series X was a questionable name from the start. It’s simply easier to remember the numeric names of the PlayStation consoles, and even Nintendo’s naming of hardware (save perhaps the Wii U) is simple because each console has a distinct name. The Xbox One X and Xbox Series X are very similar, and it’s easy to confuse the two.
From a perspective of hardware uniformity, it makes some sense that the X and S names were carried over from last generation. If Xbox wants to stick with the X and S formula for the long haul, it seems like a solid game plan to have the two versions (powerful and more expensive, less powerful and more affordable) and said versions be named X and S. However, it probably would have helped if this new 2020 console had a better name than “Series.”
The new console was known for a long time as Project Scarlett. Theoretically, if the next-gen Xbox was named something like Xbox Scarlett X and Xbox Scarlett S, fans probably wouldn’t be so tongue-tied and confused when talking about the new consoles, especially in comparison to the Xbox One. There are pros and cons to the Xbox Series X and PS5. One thing the Sony console seems to have going for it is a more simplistic name.
