Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time looks like it may recapture the feel of classic Crash games that fans have wanted for years. Its recent launch trailer demonstrates the classic gameplay formula, new mask power-ups, energetic levels, five playable characters, and all-new modes.
Previous reveals confirmed the inclusion of a new N. Verted mode, where players can go through levels again but with new visual twists; as well as Flashback Tape levels, which are optional but extremely difficult puzzle levels that take place before the events of the first game. Now, multiplayer modes have been confirmed as well.
IGN reports that Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will have two distinct local multiplayer modes, which support two-to-four players. While there have been plenty of Crash spin-off games with multiplayer, this is a rare instance for a mainline title.
The first mode is Bandicoot Battle, a competitive option, which has two different sub-games to play. Checkpoint Race functions similarly to time trials from previous entries and has players take turns seeing who can reach each checkpoint quickest, while smashing certain crates to temporarily freeze the timer.
The other option is Crate Combo, which is all about smashing as many crates as possible. However, to earn higher scores, players will need to smash crates in quick succession, as each crate broken raises the point value of the next. The combo resets if too much time is spent trying to break one.
The co-op mode, dubbed Pass N. Play, lets up to four players work together to complete levels from the main campaign, either in their original form or in the N. Verted mode. As for playable characters, there are Crash and Coco, but players can also choose between the returning Fake Crash and the brand-new Fake Coco.
None of these modes have online support, so friends will have to meet up in person to play them. There are also no online leaderboards for the competitive mode and, at the time of writing, there’s nothing to suggest that developer Toys For Bob will add online capabilities later.
Still, this likely won’t dilute the excitement surrounding the game for many fans, even if its playable demo has led to some frustration. The demo is only available to those who pre-order the game, which some believe is counterintuitive given demos are typically meant to convince those who are on the fence to buy a game.
There were also some fears of microtransactions could be added to Crash 4. Although Toys For Bob clarified that this won’t be the case, the same was said for Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled before Activision added them in post-launch.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 2.
