This past week has been full of unexpected news for Xbox fans. On Monday, it was revealed that Microsoft has acquired ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion, which gives it ownership over developers like Bethesda, Arkane Studios, and id Software. It seems like this new purchase by Microsoft is already starting to pay off for Xbox, which announced today that Doom Eternal will be coming to Xbox Game Pass soon.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers can look forward to playing Doom Eternal on their Xbox One consoles on October 1, with PC Game Pass players getting the game later in 2020. This reveal comes after the Xbox Game Pass Twitter account teased the Slayer’s arrival on its service with a fake email that had multiple hidden phrases including “LOOK BELOW” and “THE SLAYER IS COMING.”
The press release put out by Xbox today goes on to remind fans that Doom Eternal‘s The Ancient Gods – Part One DLC will be releasing on October 20 on the Xbox Store. However, whether or not the new DLC will be apart of Xbox Game Pass’ offering is unclear. That being said, Xbox has added DLC for first-party titles on Game Pass at no additional cost before, such as The Master Chief Collection, so it doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility.
Doom Eternal coming to Game Pass also spells good things for those who pre-ordered the Xbox Series X or S. Bethesda confirmed that both Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online would both be receiving free next-gen upgrades last month, so players who managed to get their hands on a Series X pre-order can take comfort in the fact they will be able to rip and tear in 4K once it launches in November.
While Xbox fans will likely be excited to pick up the Doomslayer’s latest adventure through Game Pass, Nintendo Switch players are likely less happy. Despite Doom Eternal releasing on March 20, 2020, the promised Switch port still has not been released, primarily due to the developers having to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marty Stratton, executive producer at id Software, recently gave an update to players saying the Nintendo Switch port was very close to being finished. So while Xbox players will be diving into Doom Eternal on Game Pass October 1, it looks like Switch players may only need to wait a little longer for their opportunity.
Doom Eternal is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with versions for PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X in development
