Some Holds are less memorable than others, while other Holds will grab the player’s attention as soon as they enter them. There are also numerous quests that make certain Holds stand out from the rest. By exploring Skyrim and the different cities, players are able to see what makes each Hold unique.

9 Falkreath Hold

The Falkreath Hold is in the southwestern most part of the world. It is also the first Hold the player sees, as the beginning of Skyrim takes place in this Hold. The capital city is also called Falkreath, but players are most likely not going to explore this area very much.

There are not many quests that take place in this area, with the most important questline being related to the Dark Brotherhood. About the only thing it has to claim is being the sight of the first dragon attack in Skyrim.

8 Hjaalmarch

Hjaalmarch is the Hold located right below Haafingar. It is home to the city of Morthal, which has a quest that can lead players to discover a murder mystery in the city. Players are able able to create a homestead in the Hold, giving players a place to live.

The homestead is called Windstad Manor and is available for anyone with the Hearthfire DLC. Besides these two locations, Hjaalmarch is not home to a lot of populated area. Players who want to fight vampires or walk through swamps will have a blast with this Hold.

7 The Pale

The Pale is located in the north of Skyrim, bordering the Sea of Ghosts. The capital of this Hold is Dawnstar, which becomes the home of the Dark Brotherhood after their other sanctuary is destroyed. It is also home to another homestead the player can build, this time being called Heljarchen Hall.

Players are also able to find more life in this Hold, which has an inn, farm, and military camps. Players are also able to explore Dwarven ruins and gain access to the underground city of Blackreach in this Hold.

6 Winterhold

The Hold of Winterhold is located in the northeast part of Skyrim. It also borders the Sea of Ghosts, but it is home to the College of Winterhold. Players are able to attend the college and learn magic, while also learning about the history of the Hold. The sea is also frozen in this area, meaning players can explore shipwrecks along the shore.

It is also one of the more unique holds, as players are sent to an island when they are arrested. The history of the Hold is also interesting, as Winterhold was once the capital of Skyrim.

5  Whiterun Hold

Whiterun is the first Hold players will be able to fully explore when they start the game. After escaping from Helgen, players will be guided to the city of Whiterun to warn the Jarl. Because of this, players are most likely going to become familiar with the area and know the region well.

Whiterun will also most likely be the city where players get their first house. There are also a few cities and farms for the player to explore, giving players more characters to meet and more quests to complete.

4 Haafingar

Haafingar is located in the northwest part of Skyrim and is the home of the High Kings of Skyrim. It is also the smallest Hold in Skyrim, with its capital city being Solitude. Players are able to mingle with important civil war figures, such as the leaders of the Imperial Legion in the area.

This Hold is also important to the Dark Brotherhood questline, as it is where the Emperor can be assassinated. The city of Solitude also is in a cool location, being set on a giant rock that goes over the Karth River.

3 The Reach

The Reach is located in western Skyrim and is the location of an uprising. The Forsworn are Bretons who want to take back The Reach for themselves. Players are also able to explore Dwarven ruins, including ones located under the capital city of Markarth. The city of Markarth is also the location where Ulfric Stormcloak defeated the Forsworn, only to become wanted by guards.

This was a direct cause of the Skyrim Civil War. Players are able to help the Forsworn in their rebellion against the Empire, meaning players can give the land back to the people who once lived there.

2 Eastmarch

Eastmarch is the Hold where the Stormcloak Rebellion’s base of operations is. The capital city is Windhelm, with Windhelm’s jarl being Ulfric Stormcloak. Because of this, players can take part in battle to either take the city of Windhelm or defend the city.

While there may not be many settlements for the player to explore, the ones that exist offer exciting quests. Aside from the Civil War questline, players can help solve a murder in the city of Windhelm. There are also a good number of mines, giving players a place to collect resources.

1 The Rift

The Rift is located in the southwest of Skyrim. The capital city of The Rift is Riften, which is also home to the Thieves Guild. Players are able to explore the underground area of the city, leading to interesting encounters. There are also two other settlements located in The Rift — Ivarstead and Shor’s Stone.

Players are able to return the Thieves Guild to its former glory, while also discovering the dark secrets of Riften. The Rift is covered in forests, meaning it is unlikely a dragon will be able to land and attack the player. This can give the player an advantage when it comes to fighting the dragons.
