God of War 2 Needs to Take Advantage of This PS5 Feature

Whether battling gods on Mount Olympus or facing them in the cold and unforgiving Norse lands, the God of War franchise has given players plenty of enemies to take out. That diversity in enemy types is a big part of way the series has become so successful for the PlayStation brand. The 2018 release of God of War continued this trend, taking players from the classic Greek world and instead showing players an older Kratos living inside a world intertwined with Norse Mythology.

Instead of familiar Greek inspired enemies like Harpies and Medusas, players would go on to face off with Draugr, Trolls,  Revenants, and even gods such as Balder. Considering that Sony Santa Monica has not only confirmed that the next God of War is tentatively scheduled for release in 2021 and will continue the journey of Kratos and Atreus through the coming Ragnarok event, the game has another big opportunity for PlayStation 5 players.

Besides the new technology powering the PlayStation 5 system, such as its ultra quick SSD, one of the biggest additions to Sony’s next generation plans is the new DualSense controller. Revealed earlier this year, the new PS5 controller packs in a lot of new technology that its predecessors didn’t have, including adaptive triggers, a USB-C charging port, built-in microphone, and improved haptic feedback.

While not a new feature for a PlayStation controller, the new haptic feedback inside of the DualSense takes things a bit further than its predecessors. The improved rumble feature can be programmed by a studio to allow the player to feel different surfaces by timing the rumbles with the action on screen as well as using different rumbles to simulate the force of an attack or the feel of a surface type. Sony hopes this real time feedback helps players not only better immerse themselves, but react to things in-game faster.

For God of War: Ragnarok, this feature could be a game changer. Using the haptic feedback of the controller, Sony Santa Monica could allow the controller to let the player feel the different types of enemies that’ll be squaring off against. On one hand, attacks would likely feel different due to the different elements in the game from wood and metal, to stone and ice. Each one would give off a different feel to the person playing through the rumble feedback.

In addition to attacking, haptic feedback can be a tool used for defense seeing Kratos guard and parry against different weapon types. Blocking an arrow would likely feel a whole lot lighter in terms of rumble force and easier to manage than trying to defend a position from getting smacked by a massive stone club. It’s also possible players will seem more fantastical creatures with Ragnarok being set off, giving Sony Santa Monica even more ways to showcase the technology.

For example, God of War featured plenty of trolls for players to fight, most of which carried a massive stone totem. Throwing the Leviathan Axe or swinging the Blades of Chaos at these enemies could feel vastly different depending on which part of the troll it hit. Hitting the stone totem could feel harsh compared to hitting the actual soft troll flesh. In addition, taking a hit from the troll could feel quite different depending on the object used. Getting smashed by the massive stone totem would likely set off a more violent rumble than simply getting swatted away by the troll’s backhand.

Along with trolls, the enemies players faced off against in the first game were diverse enough to justify this sort of addition to the sequel. The bony Draugr would feel vastly different than it would swinging at the more ethereal Revenants. Even some of the more difficult battles against the Valkyries would be made all the more exciting considering how heavily armored each one was as their weapons clashed against the player’s own arsenal.

With Ragnarok expected to be a major component inside this upcoming title, players would likely get a chance to battle more of the Norse pantheon of Gods, presenting another opportunity for this feature to add another unique layer to these traditionally epic moments. If Thor is indeed part of the game as many fans are hoping, improved haptic feedback would likely serve to enhance the fight beyond what most players would expect as the Leviathan Axe and Mjolnir square off.

In the end, players will likely be waiting some time before any more news is shared regarding the next God of War. However, for as much as Sony has touted these new DualSense controller features, it wouldn’t make sense for its own first party studios to completely ignore them. Adding these unique features to these exclusive games could go a long way in helping them really stand out further from the crowd.

God of War 2 is scheduled to launch in 2021 for the PlayStation 5.
