Bungie surprised fans with a destination overview this week, showcasing what Guardians can expect to find on Europa in Destiny 2: Beyond Light. There’s a lot to take in, and a closer look at the new trailer reveals unusual units among the alien races that players have been battling for some time.
This week, it was also revealed that Variks will be coming back to Destiny 2, and accompanying Guardians on their journey across Europa. He, alongside the Exo Stranger, will set off the events of the expansion, urging players to explore the latent power under the frigid wasteland. Fans can currently inspect the full map of Europa to get a better idea of where they’ll spend their time on the frozen moon.
The first of the new Fallen units is a repurposed Insurrection Prime, the boss of Black Armory‘s Scourge of the Past Raid. This type of machinery was unique to the Raid, but the Fallen seem to have shrunken down the model to be used on the front lines. The mech prominently bears the mark of the House of Darkness, showing that it will be exclusive to the Fallen on Europa. Interestingly, these Fallen enemies exclusively use their original Destiny 1 models, and not the updated Destiny 2 models.
Regarding the mech enemy, it retains the ability to levitate on the battlefield, and its plating can open up to reveal the critical spot in its core. It looks like a formidable foe but one that can be countered effectively. The trailer also briefly shows two unique Fallen Captains that use Stasis abilities to attack players. One of them even replicates the heavy ground slam attack of the Titan Stasis subclass, Behemoth. This may be exciting for many fans, who have never seen Fallen utilize Destiny‘s space-magic before.
As of now, the Vex get only one new unit, and it looks to be a hybrid between a Vex Minotaur and a Vex Harpy. Players can expect to face off against this unit frequently on Europa, as they are seen on multiple locations and populate Darkness strongholds. Their only known ability is a dive attack that creates an Arc shockwave around the area of impact. It is unclear how the Vex play into the story of Beyond Light but their presence around the pyramid ship is non-negligible.
To the delight of some, AI companions make a return in Beyond Light. For a brief moment, a fireteam can be seen fighting alongside a Vanguard bot in a Braytech Exoscience facility. These were popularized in the Forsaken campaign when The Spider’s personal guards accompanied players on the Tangled Shore. They were utilized again during the opening of Shadowkeep, and now in a Beyond Light mission.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light will be available on November 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The PS5 version should be available November 12.
