With hits like Blair Witch and Observer, Bloober Team is firmly establishing itself as one of the most consistent studios when it comes to the horror genre. One of its most ambitious projects, The Medium, is set to launch later this year as an Xbox Series X console exclusive, and slowly but surely, more details about the game are being made available in the weeks leading up to its launch.
Most recently, Bloober Team released a new trailer for The Medium that focuses on two important characters that aren’t playable protagonist Marianne. The trailer shows Marianne interact with Sadness, a strange little girl in a mask who can only be seen in the warped dimension. Their conversation is interrupted when The Maw, a horrific monster portrayed by prolific video game voice actor Troy Baker, arrives on the scene.
Similarly to how Marianne can only seen Sadness in the alternate, supernatural reality, she can only see The Maw in that reality as well. However, The Maw’s presence can be felt in both realities, as its footsteps disturb a puddle in the “real” world. This shows that Marianne is not safe from the supernatural enemies she encounters, no matter which reality she’s currently focused on.
Of course, The Medium lets players explore both realities simultaneously, and so this makes sense. In fact, the game’s main gameplay hook is this ability to explore two versions of the same place at once, something that Bloober Team has insisted is only possible thanks to next-generation technology. It will be interesting to see how The Medium‘s dual-reality gameplay works in practice, but it has potential to open the door for some very unique puzzles and gameplay moments.
Unfortunately, The Medium‘s release date wasn’t confirmed by the latest trailer, though the game is still aiming for a vague Q4 2020 release window. As one of the only Xbox Series X console exclusive games set to launch in 2020, The Medium would go a long way in bolstering the console’s launch lineup. But even if The Medium isn’t available for Xbox Series X at launch, Bloober Team will still be well-represented on day one.
A number of Bloober Team games will be available to play on Xbox Series X at launch thanks to the console’s backward compatibility program. Not only that, but Observer: System Redux, a remaster of the studio’s well-received cyberpunk horror game, is confirmed as an Xbox Series X launch title. So even if The Medium isn’t available on launch day, there should be no shortage of games for horror fans to play on Xbox Series X.
The Medium will launch in Q4 of 2020 for PC and Xbox Series X.
