Tribeca Film Festival Forms Gaming Advisory Board With Major Names

Tribeca Games has announced it will have an expanded role in the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival taking place from June 9 to 20, 2021. The gaming arm of the festival is opening submissions for its own video game award, and has established an advisory board with some major names in the industry.

A nearly twenty-year-old stalwart of the entertainment industry, Tribeca Film Festival has previously dipped its toes into the gaming pool. L.A. Noire became the first video game recognized by the festival in 2011. Two years later, Beyond: Two Souls, starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, premiered at the festival. Other games showcased by Tribeca have included God of War (2018), which just announced a sequelFirewatch; and What Remains of Edith Finch.

For the first time, the festival is now open to game submissions for its inaugural Tribeca Games Award through January 31, 2021. The organization says it will “honor upcoming games … that demonstrate artistic excellence in storytelling.” Guiding Tribeca Games through its new offering is an all-star advisory board with notable names including Geoff  Keighley, Producer of The Game Awards, and Hideo Kojima, who created Metal Gear Solid for Konami and Death Stranding for Kojima Productions.

Also included on the board are Kiki Wolfkill, Head of Transmedia & Entertainment for the Halo franchise; Mandalorian creator and Director Jon Favreau; Electronic Arts Co-founder Bing Gordon; Sam Lake, Creative Director at Remedy Entertainment; and filmmaker Nia DaCosta, slated to direct the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel.

Though this year’s festival was cancelled due to the pandemic, the creation of a prominent new awards show is huge news for video games. Tribeca is a renowned, respected festival that draws a large audience. In 2019, the festival hosted over 146,000 people, according to Tribeca. Cinematic and story-driven games share a space with films in terms of how they experiment with the medium, so this is another potential step on the road to video games gaining more legitimacy, as an art form, in the eyes of the wider entertainment industry.

Thus, it is appropriate that a person like Geoff Keighley is among those steering the ship. The former G4 host brought games to a national audience via the Spike Video Game Awards, and has been a constant presence at events like E3. Following the cancellation of E3 2020, Keighley organized the Summer Game Fest to help publishers and developers announce games. For years, Keighley’s stated mission has been to bring gaming into the mainstream, and as such his presence at Tribeca Games seems appropriate for the work ahead.
