Animal Crossing: New Horizons-Themed Switch Coming Back in Stock

After selling out shortly following its announcement, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons-themed Nintendo Switch will be back on sale soon with local retailers, but there’s no telling how long it’ll stick around for before selling out again.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the biggest and best-selling games of the year. Though it released back in March, it’s stayed on many top-ten bestsellers list throughout the year. New Horizons is currently the second-most sold game of 2020, just behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but it surpassed digital sales in one calendar month over any other game in history. Much of its success is attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic, as its release came at the same time many countries were forcing stay-at-home orders. This not only started an escapism craze but also enabled many trends, such as companies advertising within New Horizons.

Likewise, fans were also geared up for the New Horizonsthemed Switch that released one week before the game in March. Nintendo only made a limited number of the special console, therefore making sales for it unexpectedly competitive. Not only did the themed Switch sell out while still in pre-order, but the original launch Switch also sold out in response for demand over Animal Crossing.

Though some fans have sold their New Horizons consoles—or even just the dock and Joy-Cons by themselves—for insanely marked-up prices, fans can finally get their hands on the coveted pastel blue and green Switch. GameStop’s website is currently struggling due to PS5 pre-order demand, but it’s the only local retail site that currently has the product listed as available and for the Switch’s regular price of $299. But it’s expected that other retailers will have it available sometime soon.

The Animal Crossing Switch is the “V2” version of the console. It has longer battery life than the launch Switch, but all other non-themed Switch consoles produced from March and going forward were also made with extended battery life. Nintendo needed to upgrade the GPU and CPU components for all Switch consoles after the original ones went out of rotation. This resulted in less power consumption, and in return, improved battery life.

New Horizons players should be getting amped up for the fall-themed content on its way. The free Animal Crossing Fall Update will be available on September 30th and will add pumpkin farming, spooky reactions, and, of course, Halloween activities like decorating and giving away candy.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
