Bungie Explains Why Destiny 2’s Prophecy Dungeon is Disappearing for a While

As the Season of Arrivals draws to a close, Destiny 2 is preparing for the launch of the Beyond Light expansion. While developer Bungie has teased new enemies on Destiny 2‘s latest setting, Europa, it also announced some major technical changes coming to the game in November. Despite these advances, the game’s engineering team is warning players that the next updates have created some serious bugs.

In Bungie’s weekly blog update, engineering director David Aldridge explained that Beyond Light‘s major revamps would allow the developers to continue expanding Destiny 2 rather than building a sequel from scratch. Although players will likely not notice any major changes in their gameplay, Aldridge explained that the changeover impacted the functionality of some missions and stages.

According to the Destiny Engineering Director, Bungie will transition Destiny 2‘s mission scripting model to the game’s Physics Host. Aldridge said that the Physics Host’s ability to precisely track enemy combatant locations and actions would allow for new types of Destiny 2 missions. However, Aldridge noted that they were only introducing the system in Beyond Light, and that it would require further development to remove bugs from missions predating the expansion. Unfortunately, some Destiny 2 missions suffered from more issues than others, like the Prophecy Dungeon. However, fans of the popular level won’t have to wait long. Bungie claims that it will restore the Prophecy Dungeon by the end of this year.

Thankfully, players largely did not respond negatively to the Prophecy Dungeon’s temporary removal. To reassure players, Bungie followed up its update on Reddit, with a response to players that clarified that the Prophecy Dungeon will return “before the end of December.” When some fans didn’t understand how the changes worked, one response explained that the Prophecy Dungeon’s missions relied on the mission hosts currently managing player activity more than others, and would have to be rewritten for the new Physics Host approach. Moreover, players began speculating whether Bungie created the Destiny 2 Content Vault in order to store incompatible missions while it rewrote them.

However, others pointed out that the Content Vault was likely meant to combat Destiny 2‘s massive file size. Either way, Bungie seems poised to replace the old content with some equally engaging new campaigns. Whether fans are looking forward to new story content or hoping for new improvements to the missions and gameplay, hopefully Bungie’s upcoming expansion will live up to fan expectations and give the three year old game a new lease on life.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
