Godfall Developer Explains the Game’s Combat Mechanics

One of the launch games for the PlayStation 5, Godfall has been a pretty solid indicator of the visual fidelity of the next-generation for quite some time now, frequently showing off stunning 4K gameplay at numerous events. Recently, however, players got a more solid look at its combat, with a trailer at PAX Online showcasing some battle scenarios in the game’s “Water Realm.”

Thanks to PlayStation.Blog, Dick Heyne of Counterplay Games – the studio behind Godfall – has gone even deeper on what to expect from the upcoming release’s combat. Alongside detailing how weak points work and showcasing new weapons, the technical producer had a lot to share about some of the combat’s finer details, such as how to wield shields and stun enemies.

The post begins by detailing how to exploit an enemy’s Achilles heel, with Heyne claiming that weaknesses are a big part of Godfall’s combat. “An enemy’s weak point will typically reveal itself after they attack,” the producer claims, although he does hint that players will find alternate methods of exposing these attackable areas. These spots will deal significant amounts of damage, with Heyne revealing that the team wanted to reward “patience and accuracy” during play. Players will also come across heavily-armored enemies that will be hard to take down, with the post detailing how they will break down these intimidating foes by opening up combos with powerful, heavy strikes. This will, in turn, fill up a “breach bar,” which will stun enemies and leave them open to takedowns when fully filled.

Heyne also goes over a feature called “Soulshatter,” which acts a lot like the aforementioned breach bar. This time around, players build up momentum by attacking an enemy, eventually unleashing the stored up power with R2 when the size of the bar exceeds their enemy’s health bar. This instantly kills their foe by shattering their “spiritual fabric.” Another tactic sees players able to pull out a secondary weapon mid-fight to fire out an explosive burst of power, while Heyne details the uses of shields as well. According to the Godfall producer, players can use the defensive item to parry attacks, throw it as a deadly ranged item, and even utilize it to turn an enemy into obsidian. Finally, the post details “Archon Mode,” which allows the player to unleash one of several powerful special moves after powering up a meter built through fighting numerous enemies.

The combat sounds like a lot of fun, and with the post also revealing that players can use heavy warhammers and greatswords alongside a more range-friendly polearm, it seems it allows players to truly play their way. With Godfall on its way very soon, it seems the game will well and truly be an expansive next-generation experience.

Godfall will be available on November 12 for PC and PlayStation 5.
