Recently revealed through a leak online, it seemed Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 would be making their way to PC yet again through a more readily accessible modern port. It was definitely exciting news, with the games originally making their way to PC shortly after their PlayStation launches but never coming officially porting over to digital storefronts like Steam.
The leaks have been proven authentic through an announcement today, with GOG revealing that Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and five other classic Konami games will be launching on the storefront. The titles are all available today, meaning those who want to return to the adventures of Solid Snake, Raiden, and Simon Belmont can do so right now.
Looking at the newly added Metal Gear games, it’s clear fans will be getting their hands on a huge part of video game history when they pick up any of the three legendary releases. Metal Gear is largely looked at as the catalyst for the stealth genre, innovating the style of gameplay that would go on to define some of the industry’s most influential games. Meanwhile Metal Gear Solid is easily one of the most important releases in the history of the medium, bringing Hideo Kojima’s fluid mix of over-the-top storytelling, political intrigue, and explosive action to a 3D space for the first time back in 1998. Metal Gear Solid 2 only went on to deepen the style of gameplay and story that Kojima established through the first Metal Gear Solid, adding a new protagonist (to the dismay of many) and utilizing the new power of the PlayStation 2.
The other games are sorted into what GOG calls the Konami Collector’s Series: Castlevania & Contra, which includes Castlevania, Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse, Contra, and Super C. As GOG puts it, the title puts “two of Konami’s most popular franchises in one package,” meaning fans can experience some classic games for a more affordable cost. Castlevania and Contra are obviously two huge franchises that have influenced gaming considerably over the years, so PC players should definitely check them out if they’ve got the time.
It’s interesting to see more and more of Hideo Kojima’s library of titles becoming readily accessible on PC, with the director also releasing Death Stranding on the platform earlier this year. Hopefully, it’s something fans see more of in the years to come, with the PC being a great platform to access some older games no longer available on modern consoles.
