New Yakuza Game To Be Revealed at TGS 2020 | Game Rant

The long-running Yakuza game series has been gaining popularity recently in the west, and now English-speaking fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming release of Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon. However, a new tweet claims that Sega will reveal the series’ latest work at TGS.

In Japan, Yakuza 7 released back in January of 2020, which makes it highly unlikely that it will be the focus in this announcement. While it’s possible that an expansion may be released for the game, the new tweet makes it sound more like it’s a new entry to the franchise.

In a now-deleted tweet from TGS co-host Ayana Tsubaki, she claims that “#ryugagotoku #yakuza The latest work in the [Yakuza] series will finally be announced” during the Sega presentation on Sunday, September 27. Unfortunately, the tweet doesn’t give away more than that, but given that she’s one of the hosts, it seems unlikely that she’s mistaken. The fact that the tweet is now deleted may simply be because any news for the Yakuza series was meant to be kept secret. While there could be a slim chance it was a mistake, it’s more likely that the account would have issued an apology or amended the tweet to indicate that, rather than quietly deleting it.

For now, there’s no clear-cut answer as to what game will be announced during the show. From the phrasing of the tweet, it seems unlikely that it will be a port, though Sega plans to port older games to PC. There’s a small chance that Sega could announce Yakuza Online coming to the west, which is a gacha mobile title, but as it launched in Japan back in 2018, it can’t be considered the ‘latest work.’ It’s doubtful that Tsubaki would have been excited over a game that’s old to Japan being translated to English, in any case.

Previously, a typo stirred up attention on the official Japanese Yakuza site, as it indicated that an upcoming event in the Yakuza Online mobile game would be tied into Yakuza Kiwami 3. The only problem here is that Yakuza Kiwami 3 hadn’t been publicly announced prior to that, and Sega still hasn’t released any official confirmation that it’s in development. In any case, the Producer behind the Yakuza series, Masayoshi Yokoyama, officially noted on Twitter that Yakuza Kiwami 3 would not be at TGS 2020.

For now, the announcement remains a mystery. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X arriving shortly, it would make a lot of sense to release a remake from the PS3 era of Yakuza, utilizing the power of these new next-gen systems. Barring any last-minute leaks, fans will just have to wait and watch Sega’s TGS broadcast on September 27.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon will release on Xbox Series X on November 10th and PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 13th. PS5 version is planned to release at a later date.
