Resident Evil 8 Will Have More Open Environments and Exploration

Resident Evil 8 was featured at Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show presentation, where director Morimasa Sato discussed various aspects about the upcoming survival-horror game. One thing that Sato stressed during the presentation was that Resident Evil 8 will be more open than Resident Evil 7 was, with a greater focus on exploration. To that end, the developers have strived to make the village in the game a second “protagonist” alongside Ethan Winters.

Resident Evil 8 will give players much more freedom to explore than Resident Evil 7 did, so fans of the franchise should be able to expect a generally less linear experience. Resident Evil games have allowed for open exploration in the past, though it will be interesting to see how it works with even less restrictions. According to Sato, the more open exploration in Resident Evil 8 makes it feel like “a horror movie you can play.”

The developers also spoke about Resident Evil 8 protagonist Ethan Winters, who will get significantly more fleshed out in this game when compared to RE7. They admitted that Ethan was little more than a “camera” for the player, but in Resident Evil 8, he will be a more fully-realized character.

Besides Ethan, there will be plenty other characters for fans to interact with throughout the course of Resident Evil 8. Frequent Resident Evil series protagonist Chris Redfield has been featured numerous times in the trailers, and he will no doubt play a major role in the upcoming game. Ethan’s wife Mia will also be seen, and there will be various NPCs in the village that players can interact with as well.

Besides these potential allies, Ethan will also have to contend with a variety of monsters in Resident Evil 8. Witch-like people have been shown in the trailers, along with a werewolf-like creature. Previous leaks have suggested that Resident Evil 8 will have armored zombies as well, so it sounds like the new game will have much more enemy variety than RE7, and that Ethan will have his hands full, to say the least.

While Sato spoke briefly about Resident Evil 8 at Tokyo Game Show today, much more information on the game is expected to come later this weekend. Capcom has a lengthier Resident Evil 8 Tokyo Game Show presentation planned, and it’s there where fans can expect to learn a lot more about what they can expect from the game. Here’s hoping that will include a playable Resident Evil 8 demo that fans can try before release, similarly to what Capcom did with RE7.

Resident Evil 8 will launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2021.
