Super Mario 3D All-Stars Bug Lets Player Speed Through Mission in 10 Seconds

Super Mario 3D All-Stars brings three popular Mario titles; Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy; to the Nintendo Switch with visual updates and additional improvements here and there. However, the games are not entirely cleaned up, as evidenced by Mario 64 retaining a typo despite other dialogue changes and by a bug in Mario Sunshine that lets players beat a lengthy time-based mission in under 10 seconds.

After completing five missions in Sunshine‘s Sirena Beach, which includes defeating the bosses Phantamanta and King Boo, players will unlock the mission “Scrubbing Sirena Beach.” In this mission, the Pianta hotel manager asks Mario to clean up 95 percent of the electric goop outside the resort within three minutes. While this normally requires players to run around and frantically spray F.L.U.D.D.’s water jet, a Japanese player who goes by toobou on Twitter showcased a more expedient method last week.

By combining backflips and wide-spreading shotgun sprays, toobou is able to clean everything within a small radius around the hotel manager. Apparently that’s considered enough to complete the mission, which is over in six minutes and 21 seconds. If other fans can pull it off, that would easily put them one step closer to defeating Bowser so they can unlock Mario’s Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses.

This is not the only quirky thing players have found in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars release of Super Mario Sunshine, a game that was already relatively well known for having rough patches like the difficult-to-control pachinko machine level. For example, in the Bianco Hills mission “Secret of Dirty Lake,” players have discovered visible debug cubes in Mario Sunshine, believed to be a relic of its emulation on Switch.

That being said, it seems quirks and bugs have not doomed the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection to infamy. In fact, the collection has been wildly successful in its first week, leading to 3D All-Stars topping UK sales charts after selling out high volumes on storefronts like Amazon.

Not every player has been happy with how Nintendo decided to re-release these Super Mario games on Switch, but many are hopeful that its success will lead to more games returning from the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Wii eras. The traction games like Mario Sunshine have been getting on social media thanks to newly-discovered bugs may also be a good sign for how popular Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been in its short time on the market.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is available now for Nintendo Switch.
