Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Confirms New Playable Character, Shows Off Gameplay

A brand new trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity dropped this morning. Among the exciting details in the “Champions Unite!” trailer, a new member is confirmed to be joining the list of playable characters in Age of Calamity.

The hack and slash is the follow up to Hyrule Warriors, which saw a boost of 1,500% sales for the Switch Definitive Edition on Amazon thanks to the announcement of Age of Calamity. While the original was based on the world of Zelda as a whole, Age of Calamity is based on Breath of the Wild, which means it uses characters from that epic tale.

Among the Champions like Urbosa and Mipha, Impa also gets some action in the newest trailer, confirming that she will be a playable character. Impa is an old and wise sage-like character in Breath of the Wild, but because Age of Calamity takes place 100 years before that game, this version of Impa is a young adult.

The Age of Calamity footage shown at Tokyo Game Show confirms Impa as a playable character, wielding fighting abilities that not many would have expected based on how the character was represented in Breath of the Wild. There is a chance that more characters will be revealed leading up to the 2021 release, and perhaps some of them will be surprises now, based on Impa alone.

Some fans online instantly realized something funny about the design of Impa. This Age of Calamity model of Impa looks borderline identical to Paya from Breath of the Wild, who is the granddaughter of Impa. Because the characters are related, it makes sense that they resemble each other. However, the resemblance makes the two look like identical sisters more than grandmother and granddaughter. Age of Calamity will allow local co-op, so maybe it will even be possible to fight with Impa and Paya alongside each other (assuming the game allows for some characters that don’t necessarily fit with the narrative, like the original did).

From a narrative perspective, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is doing some interesting things. Grabbing characters from the Breath of the Wild world, but in a much younger state, presents some unique opportunities. As the story will also clear up some details of what happened before Breath of the Wild, some fans are hoping that the elements can be linked to the original Hyrule Warriors, and the story can become canon. Fans will have to wait a bit longer to find out what other characters are coming to the game or how the story will connect with other games, but for now, the trailer is more than enough to tease about the possibilities.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be available on November 20 for Nintendo Switch.
