Although Kingdom Hearts 3 brought the Dark Seeker Saga to an end, the franchise is far from over. There’s been a lot of teases as to what to expect next, but some of this content may be explored in spin-off titles. Nonetheless, whether it’s a decade away or not, Kingdom Hearts 4 seems likely to happen eventually.
When it does, there’s plenty to learn from the past game, but there’s at least one fan desire that should also be fulfilled: Kingdom Hearts 4 should take better advantage of the variety of Disney properties available. Indeed, Kingdom Hearts 3 released with 9 worlds, which isn’t a far cry from previous games. The game included new worlds based on Monsters Inc and Frozen, but most have been visited before such as Olympus and 100 Acre Wood.
Disney has grown a lot since the first game and has a multitude of properties under its belt. Due to agreements elsewhere, it stands to reason that not everything that’s Disney owns could or would appear. However, since 2000, the family-friendly giant has acquired Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and 21st Century Fox. With these in hand, there’s plenty that Square Enix and Disney could take advantage of. For example, Pixar could see Finding Nemo, Cars, or The Incredibles join the Kingdom Hearts lineup like Toy Story and Monsters Inc. The former two may be more difficult, but even if temporarily, seeing Sora as a fish or a car would do wonders for the imagination.
The 21st Century Fox Acquisition gives Disney a ton of material to work with, and one of note would be James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. Disney is producing the next few movies, and it wouldn’t be impossible to see it appear in Kingdom Hearts 4. Indeed, the very premise of Avatar seems like it would work well with the heartless or new enemies in Kingdom Hearts, and it would be a good promotion for the franchise when/if the time comes that the two could sync up.
Perhaps most exciting would be a world based on Marvel or Star Wars. In terms of Marvel, Earth-616 would be perfect for Sora to meet figures like Captain America, Iron Man, and more in a super hero themed world. And although Star Wars means suspending disbelief of it being a “single world,” it would be interesting to see Sora explore any of the many Star Wars locations. The biggest draw for some, though, would be a lightsaber version of the Keyblade.
None of these are guaranteed to appear in the next game, but many hoped a diverse selection of worlds would be available in Kingdom Hearts 3. As such, this is something that could and should still be fulfilled with the next mainline entry. Worlds like Shibuya from The World Ends with You and Verum Rex are all but guaranteed, but that should rule out a more diverse line-up of commercial Disney Worlds. If anything, combine those with a strong presence of Final Fantasy characters, as well as iconic characters from Marvel and Star Wars, and it sounds like a recipe for success.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is not confirmed to be in development.
