Mass Effect: 10 Games To Play If You Like The RPG Phenomenon

When it comes to RPGs, only a handful are considered truly iconic. Mass Effect places players on a spacefaring adventure in a story-intensive game. It’s been over ten years since the original’s story featuring Commander Shepard’s escapades in the Milky Way Galaxy. The Reapers have returned, and they plan to purge the galaxy of intelligent organic life.

Although Mass Effect: Andromeda was considered a letdown, the original trilogy was near flawless. With a compelling narrative and excellent character development, Mass Effect is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. Did you enjoy Mass Effect? The following should serve as go-to games if you like the RPG phenomenon.

10 The Outer Worlds

Developer Obsidian Entertainment has done it again with their latest science fiction RPG. The Outer Worlds contains space exploration, dialogue choices, and futuristic combat like Mass Effect. The characters you meet along the journey make Mass Effect and The Outer Worlds memorable games.

The Outer Worlds‘ first expansion, Peril on Gorgon, is worth trying after The Outer Worlds. The expansion contains eight hours of rousing detective work.

9 Dragon Age: Origins

With both games being from the RPG genre, Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect share many qualities. The two games are similar since they both have dialogue options during gameplay. They combine stories with enjoyable gameplay, providing a seamless adventure. Dragon Age: Origins isn’t the most recent Dragon Age game, but it does have the most memorable characters. It’s less of a grinding game and more a full-fledged RPG like Mass Effect.

8 Jade Empire

BioWare’s Jade Empire will do everything but leaves players jaded during its approximately 16.5-hour-long campaign. In this award-winning RPG, your in-game decisions affect the outcomes. The land is immersive and beautiful. Will you save the land or leave a trail of destruction in your wake? The great thing about RPGs like Mass Effect and Jade Empire is that they let you make meaningful decisions. You can play as either the hero or the villain.

7 Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Although the first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was created by BioWare, the sequel was outsourced to another developer. Under the direction of acclaimed developer Obsidian Entertainment, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords takes on darker tones with more engaging battles.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords improved on the original in nearly every way. The masked cover villain Darth Nihilus’s hunger for power is something he cannot satisfy. He’s one of the Sith Lords you must defeat to save the galaxy.

6 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red, the developer behind Cyberpunk 2077, has done it again with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It is one of the most immersive RPGs available. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has dialogue options affecting game outcomes like in Mass Effect. Although they set in different universes, there are similarities between the two games. There is a lengthier learning curve for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but get past that, and you’ll be hooked during its over 50-hour campaign.

5 Anthem

One of developer BioWare’s most ambitious and latest projects is Anthem. It’s an action role-playing game with unique gameplay. Using flight controls while piloting an exosuit is unlike any other game.

Unlike in Mass Effect, Anthem’s dialogue options are inconsequential. The game presents you with dialogue options, but they are meaningless, meaning you can skip through most of the game without them. Anthem had issues at launch, but a turnaround has since made the game better.

4 Alpha Protocol

You’ll find either BioWare or Obsidian Entertainment created a significant number of games on this listicle. It’s not a coincidence that the two companies’ games are similar since they have collaborated on more than one occasion.

Alpha Protocol is a role-playing action game that was published by Sega. The game was inspired by fictional spy characters like Jason Bourne and James Bond. It’s a divisive game people criticized for lack of polish, but there is a game with enjoyable RPG elements beneath the surface.

3 Fallout: New Vegas

The Fallout series was arguably at its peak back in the days of games like Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3. These games helped define a generation alongside titles like Mass Effect.

Fallout: New Vegas was a spin-off game set in a fictional region inspired by Nevada, California, Arizona, and Utah. Interestingly enough, this post-apocalyptic game was going to have three playable races (human, super mutant, and ghoul), but the idea was ultimately scrapped before launch.

2 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic lets you choose to walk a Jedi or a Sith path. Force Powers change depending on your actions. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a smart blend of turn-based and real-time combat. The game’s riveting story, combined with character depth, gives its tremendous replay value. This retro RPG has a heavily rumored remake or sequel that may prove credible.

1 Mass Effect 2

If you enjoyed the original Mass Effect, it makes sense to follow-up with the first sequel. Mass Effect 2 is considered the best game in the series for its masterclass storytelling, dynamic characters, and gameplay.

Mass Effect 2 is arguably developer BioWare at its peak. Characters like the Illusive Man make the game too memorable. It’s only a matter of time before the Mass Effect Trilogy Remastered releases. For now, we can take comfort in the fact Mass Effect 2 has hardly aged.
