It’s no secret that Microsoft has struggled to produce high-quality exclusives for the Xbox brand in recent years. However, the company is making a concerted effort to change public perception of it and its exclusive games by acquiring big studios, as well as putting together a dream-team development studio of its own called The Initiative, which has been working away on a major Xbox game for years now. Official details on The Initiative’s game have yet to be revealed, but it’s possible answers could come sooner rather than later.
Drew Murray, design director at The Initiative who previously worked at Insomniac games on titles like Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive, recently posted an image of his daughter playing video games to Twitter. He explained that he was letting her play The Initiative’s Xbox game for an hour. “It’s been a few months since she last played and she says it’s gotten a lot better y’all,” Murray said in his tweet. This seemingly confirms that The Initiative’s new game is in a playable state, whatever it is. It also seems to indicate that the game will be appropriate for children to play, so an M for Mature rating can likely be ruled out.
Considering the games Murray has worked on in the past, that’s not too surprising. Even so, there are many replies to the tweet of people expressing disappointment that The Initiative’s game is apparently not going to be rated M. The rest of the comments seem intent on zooming in on the reflection in Murray’s daughter’s eyes to see if they can spot anything about the game, but unsurprisingly, their efforts have been fruitless.
There were rumors that The Initiative was going to reveal its game at the Xbox Series X game reveal event, but that never came to pass. Since the studio was formed just a couple of years ago, it’s quite possible that fans won’t see the game at all in 2020, and may have to wait until 2021 or even later to see what it’s about. In the meantime, there have been plenty of rumors about what it may entail, though fans should take these details with a grain of salt.
If the rumors are to be believed, The Initiative is working on a Perfect Dark game, but one that is not necessarily a first-person shooter. It will apparently be set in the same universe, but will be a third-person action-adventure with cutting-edge graphics and online functionality of some kind. Again, nothing has been confirmed so far, and it’s unclear when a reveal will even take place.
At this point, it seems as though The Initiative’s game won’t be revealed until some time after the Xbox Series X launches. There aren’t many upcoming gaming events left for 2020, except for The Game Awards in December, so if a reveal doesn’t happen by then, Xbox fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed for next year.
