Call of Duty Screenshot Suggests Activision May Be Increasing Account Security

A screenshot from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Activision suggests that new security features may be on their way. The image has been circulating the official Modern Warfare subreddit, and it shares an interesting bit of information.

The image appeared shortly after Activision denied a rumored data breach. Although the two are not directly connected, the Call of Duty commenters on the Reddit post think otherwise. Still, many fans are simply grateful that new security may finally be coming to the popular shooter’s accounts.

The post was made to Reddit by HakaishinChampa. Although it is a very simple screenshot, it does share some rather major information for Call of Duty fans‘ Activision accounts. The first thing that fans noticed is that the ability to delete an account has been removed. How or why this would impact additional security features is unknown, but it may mean that accounts will continue to persist even if a player has lost access to the account. Although the button to disable accounts has been removed, players could still go through a request process if they thought account deletion was absolutely necessary. It is unknown what new security features may be underway, but many fans hope that two-factor authentication is among the many changes.

The author of this post also found that a brand new page has been added to the Activision Support site. The page leads to an account recovery system which would be used to recover any account stolen, lost, or hacked. The page has been publicly available as it is pinned to the ATVISupport Twitter page.

Up until now, accounts stolen or deleted were simply lost. There has been no system in place for account recovery, a recurring and frustrating fact for the Call of Duty community. It is relieving for many members of the community that Activision’s security will be improving, even if it is by a small margin.

Despite Activision’s insistence that there has been no breach, an increase of reports on Reddit and Twitter show fans speaking out about their hacked accounts. While there is not much they can do to get their accounts back, making sure that the community is well aware of their plight helps bring attention to an underlying issue. With the implementation of Activision Account Recovery, fans may finally have a solution for gaining back lost content that has been stolen, traded, or sold by hackers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
