One of the hottest items gamers are looking to score this fall is the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card, but doing so is proving to be quite the challenge. The launch of the 3080 went so poorly that Nvidia issued an apology to the many PC enthusiasts and gamers looking to upgrade their rig who were left out in the cold. While the new graphics cards will be back in stock eventually, for those that missed out, a fan has created a 3D model of the 3080 that might also help gamers save their pennies to pay for the card when they do return to the shelves.
Nvidia did a bang up job promoting its new line of graphics cards, with many popular Twitch streamers talking up the specs. The performance the new cards could deliver seemed too good to be true for some. While they are still very powerful, reviews of Nvidia’s lineup of new cards reveal that some of the touted performance numbers are a tad exaggerated.
The reviews haven’t deterred folks from picking up the new hardware, but with stock dwindling, 3D modeler Nils Kal has created a 3D piggy bank version of the RTX 3080 for those who can’t get their hands on the real thing right now. The model’s blueprints are available for free, and it looks great when compared to the original graphics card. The designer made the model for a friend, but after it turned out so well, decided to release it publicly. A free piggy bank is certainly a lot cheaper than the prices seen on eBay for the Nvidia cards.
It has become the new norm that any highly sought after item immediately sells out online. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 pre-orders were chaotic, with fans frantically refreshing websites hoping to throw a console into their shopping cart at just the right time. The disappointment of not getting the item one is looking for can be rough, which is why fun projects like this piggy bank can lighten the mood.
With a number of would-be PC upgraders left empty handed, it seems that not getting one of the latest and greatest graphics cards could have saved gamers from a data breach. The Nvidia store may have unintentionally leaked customers’ email addresses and payment information during the sales crunch when orders went live. Of course, no such data leak has been reported for the 3D printed piggy bank version of the RTX 3080, so maybe it’s the safer bet for now.
