Generation III has its fans, but it was also a little bit of letdown from Pokémon Gold/Silver. It improved a lot of the mechanics and graphics, but the back-step came in with not only the new Pokémon, but the world itself. Playing through not just Johto but Kanto again was a huge surprise.
There is nothing like that in Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire and that’s okay. It’s gotten more respect over the years after its initial launch. One of the stronger community of fans out there are the meme creators. In order to love one must laugh so let’s see what sort of jokes these Generation III Pokémon brought on.
10 Look Ma, No Arms
It’s kind of strange to see that Marill’s baby form has no arms. Granted, Marill barely had arms to begin with. It’s like a T-Rex in that manner. That said, it’s easy to see why Azurill is so upset and cries all the time. It is beyond sad as this meme points out.
9 Mudkip Love
“So I herd u liek Mudkipz.” That’s one of the most famous meme lines of all time thanks to a series of 4Chan posts. It’s a story too long to get into but the point is it’s a beloved mainstay in the meme community. This meme plays off that idea with Brock being enamored with the Pokémon making it extra cute. Brock indeed likes Mudkips but not as much as he loves women in the anime.
8 A Secret Evolution
This creature is from the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode “Video Ouija” wherein a witch doctor summons this giant chicken. Since Combusken is a chicken as well, and the Pokémon games feature Mega evolutions, it was an easy mashup to make. Although since it is gigantic, a better meme would have been to liken it to the Gigantamax forms from the latest entries. Either way it is a creature not to be trifled with.
7 Commence The Dubstep
Who would have guessed that Loudreds would have been used in the Detective Pikachu film to blast dubstep? That seemed like a joke perhaps too late to make. Dubstep is still around, but it isn’t joked around as much online. That is, except for this meme. It’s kind of like Borat impressions or catchphrases. If used sparring it, they can still be funny. Anyway, Loudreds should have a dubstep attack in the games is the real point here.
6 Ludicolo’s Mistake
Another great memeable Pokémon from the Detective Pikachu film involves Ludicolo. It looks silly in the games but this creature looks more like an abomination in the movie. It’s a giant duck with a sombrero, crazy eyes, a beard, and it screams its name.
Just listening to it yell after getting asked for a coffee is a joke that will make anyone squeal with laughter. Putting anything over this image will surely be equally as funny, if not more, given that fact. Why god indeed.
5 Hammer Time
Medicham looks like it’s wearing parachute pants like M.C. Hammer. Many Pokémon are created from famous celebrities either in name or in look. For example, the U.S. localization of Hitmonlee is named after Bruce Lee and its punching counterpart, Hitmonchan, is named after Jackie Chan. Snorlax is even modeled after one of the original team members at Game Freak. So maybe someone is a fan of M.C. Hammer and or parachute pants at Game Freak.
4 Bootleg Pikachu
Since Pikachu became the mascot for the Pokémon franchise, Game Freak has been chasing that high for two decades now. Who will the next mascot be? Well, they certainly tried to recreate Pikachu over the years through his baby form, Pichu, and lookalikes like the flying squirrel Emolga. Plusle and Minun are among the most bootleg looking creatures on the clone list which is the basis for this blunt but on point meme.
3 Sharpedonado
Is there any more that needs to be said about this meme’s joke. Sharpedo was already a scary Pokémon. Not because it was a shark but because it was essentially a shark missile.
Mix that together in a parody of Sharknado and the region of Hoenn is in for one scary storm. Get the electric Pokémon ready because a fight is brewing.
2 Feeling Lucky?
In the anime, Ash’s Treecko likes to suck on sticks. It’s similar to how cowboys like Clint Eastwood’s characters used to do in cowboy movies. Now, this meme’s joke line has nothing to do with any Westerns. It’s actually a reference to Dirty Harry, another Clint Eastwood film, but instead of talking about bullets, Treecko is warning about his ultimate attack, Giga Drain. How much PP does it have left?
1 Wailord + Skitty
One of the things that doesn’t make sense about the Pokémon games are in regard to mating. For the most part, any Pokémon will lovingly befriend another Pokémon and lay an egg. It doesn’t matter the type or size which made the partnering of Skitty and Wailord so funny online. To quote one of the best lines in Jurassic Park, “Life, uhh, finds a way.”
