As rumors swirl about a potential comeback for the iconic franchise, Silent Hill is slowly but surely returning to prominence within the horror scene, with fans looking for a new experience set in the game’s universe. Dead by Daylight has come the closest to offering just that in recent months, integrating Pyramid Head and Cheryl Mason into the horror-based multiplayer experience, while Hideo Kojima’s PT remains one of this generation’s most influential horror releases.
However, it seems the game’s community is taking the release of more Silent Hill content into their own hands, as is evidenced by a new custom Amnesia map designed by modder TrollForce. Titled Silent Hill Respite, the map itself acts as something of a tribute to the revered horror property, featuring nods and references towards some of the most iconic aspects of Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The map itself takes place in one room with a view of the ominously foggy streets of Silent Hill outside, with the eerie location modeled after the cafe 5to2 from the original game and filled with easter eggs and callbacks to the franchise’s greatest moments. There’s a chained door behind the counter that acts as a nod to the entrance to Room 302 from Silent Hill 4: The Room, while James’ car from Silent Hill 2 is parked outside alongside a puddle of water to reference the game’s jaw-dropping end-game reveal. Looking out the window also reveals the presence of a shadowy figure amongst the fog, which is far from an uncommon sight throughout the Silent Hill series.
Discussing the creation of the map, TrollForce uploaded some director’s commentary, revealing how long it took to release the Silent Hill tribute. According to the developer, they spent around a month bringing the map to life, with the textures supposedly taking the longest time to make seen as TrollForce doesn’t have access to Photoshop.
They also run through some of the more detailed items in the room, such as a pinboard brandishing the profiles of some of the series most notable characters. TrollForce made sure to note who was alive and dead on the board, leaving the pictures of Silent Hill’s survivors in color and the ones deceased in black and white. As expected, the latter outweighs the former significantly.
The map is available now and can be downloaded here. For those looking for even more Silent Hill content, Dead by Daylight recently released a new skin for Cheryl Mason, with the cosmetic bringing the first Silent Hill’s Cybil Bennett to the game. It’s available at the in-game store right now, so players wanting to pit Bennett against Pyramid Head are in luck.
