The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Will Be ‘Worth the Wait’ | Game Rant

Naughty Dog recently celebrated The Last of Us Day with a slew of free goodies that included gifs, cosplay guides, themes, and avatars for PlayStation users. Aside from being a time to thank the community, it’s also when the company makes announcements regarding the series. Many assumed the long-awaited reveal of multiplayer for The Last of Us 2 would be among those announcements, but were disappointed to find they were not. Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann addressed its absence later via Twitter, saying that it will be worth the wait.

Another The Last of Us Day has come and gone. For those who aren’t aware, September 26 is the day the cordyceps infection reached critical mass within the game and Naughty Dog likes to commemorate “Outbreak Day” with updates on its projects and free stuff. For a limited time, PS4 themes and avatars were free to download and a collection of gifs were released that recreate popular ones from the Internet using characters from the series. The event also announced a special vinyl of the sequel’s soundtrack and a The Last of Us tabletop game. One thing was noticeably missing from the festivities, however: news on the game’s multiplayer.

Shortly after the event came to a close, Naughty Dog’s vice president, Neil Druckmann, encouraged fans not to sweat it. Through Twitter, he thanked the community and brought up the subject by assuring them their patience will be rewarded. “Thank you to all the wonderful fans for an incredible #TheLastofUsDay! Your positivity and love is incredibly inspiring. Oh… and about that other thing… be patient. It’ll be worth it.” After a series of leaks, including multiplayer gameplay footage, it was assumed the feature was closer to release than expected. Its absence from the event suggests something different. Naughty Dog still doesn’t appear quite ready to show it off.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the sequel before and after it released, and while some of that has subsided, it will be a topic of conversation in gaming circles for a very long time. The series has its fill of emotional gut-punches, but The Last of Us 2 really hit hard for some – too hard.

People tend to focus on the rough moments from the games, but one fan recently made a video highlighting The Last of Us’  happy moments to remind us that there is a lot of heart in the series too. It’s great to watch after completing the games since it reminds us of the good times, even if they were fleeting.

The Last of Us 2 is out now, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
