Wasteland 3 Dev Confirms New RPG in Development | Game Rant

inXile Entertainment is working on its next role-playing game. The developer of the extremely well-received Wasteland 3 confirmed that its next “wonderful new RPG” is currently in development, but it may be some time before fans get to see it, as development just got started.

Microsoft acquired inXile Entertainment back in 2018, and two years later Wasteland 3 dropped with strong critical success. The asymmetric turn-based RPG takes place in an apocalyptic Colorado. The team is now working on its next title, which will follow the footsteps of Wasteland as another RPG.

Brian Fargo, the studio head for inXile, recently answered a tweet from a fan who was asking about more content from the developer. He answered them by letting fans know that the next RPG from the team is being worked on. He quickly followed up that tweet with another, clarifying that the “RPG is in the infancy of pre production.”

Fans will have to wait for more information on the titles, and it is not yet known if this mysterious new RPG could be the next Wasteland title or something new entirely. Wasteland 3 has some unique gameplay, so following up that game with a next-generation Wasteland could be interesting, but it would also likely be exciting for fans to see inXile try its hands at an entirely new RPG.

Another possibility with inXile has to do with the recent Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda, as brand new opportunities have presented themselves with this move. Brian Fargo is the founder of Interplay, the team that created Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. Now that Microsoft owns both Brian Fargo’s new team at inXile and Bethesda (and Obsidian for that matter, who made Fallout: New Vegas), Xbox now has every major Fallout developer under the same roof. Perhaps this new RPG that is in its infancy could be a spinoff of Fallout. inXile also worked with Bethesda on Hunted: The Demons Forge, so the teams are used to teaming up.

The new inXile game will also run on Unreal Engine 5, according to a tweet from inXile’s Twitter page earlier this year. There are plenty of routes that the developer could go in with their next game. The fact that is has been confirmed to be another RPG is helpful in honing down the possibilities, but time will tell what exactly the game is. Another RPG under the umbrella is also interesting for Microsoft, as Xbox has become the go-to location for western RPGs.
