Final Fantasy 16‘s producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed the game’s graphics will be improved before the latest iteration in the long-running series is released.
The game was revealed during Sony’s recent PlayStation 5 Showcase event, with Yoshida acknowledging the game’s graphics during a recent panel at TGS 2020. According to the producer, the Final Fantasy 16 trailer featured graphics comprised of real-time assets. Square Enix did not want to showcase a pre-rendered teaser, which may have given fans an incorrect impression of the game.
Yoshida noted how the team has not yet performed any optimization or deep graphic fine-tuning as of yet. He acknowledged that the graphics shown in the reveal trailer were not representative of the final game, sharing that he is confident Square Enix will improve and add the necessary graphical finesse expected of a next-generation Final Fantasy game by the time the title is released.
Square Enix is set to deliver another status update on Final Fantasy 16 in October. It is reported the developer will launch a teaser site that may provide intrigued gamers with a deeper insight into Final Fantasy 16‘s world, lore, and characters. Past the potential teaser site, the next major Final Fantasy 16 announcements are planned to be delivered in 2021.
He did not specify a time frame in which fans can expect this update, however, nor did he confirm a release date for the game. Yoshida recognized the game’s long development time, as well as the delays that previous games in the series have suffered, contextualizing and juxtaposing this with Square Enix’s decision to debut its trailer with real-time assets.
It’s worth noting that the Final Fantasy 16 trailer shown at the PlayStation 5 Showcase was running on a PC build “emulating the PS5 experience,” with news later coming out that the game will seemingly be a timed console exclusive. The trailer itself featured a critical line reading, “Not available on other platforms for a limited time after release on PS5.” With only a debut trailer having been released, mystery still shrouds what fans can expect from the next entry in the Final Fantasy series, though the teaser site will undoubtedly provide many clues when it is launched.
One curious element of the new game lies in its potential age rating. Although the trailer featured a warning that its footage “may contain content inappropriate for children,” recent information in an email sent out by the European branch of Square Enix indicated the game may be rated “18” by Pan European Game Information (PEGI). If that’s the case, Final Fantasy fans can perhaps anticipate deeper, gritter themes to be explored in what would officially be considered a “Mature” title.
Final Fantasy 16 is currently in development for PlayStation 5.
