Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Screenshots Show Goron Champion Daruk in Action

Nintendo’s big game this holiday season is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which will serve as a prequel to Breath of the Wild. With Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity looking to be the last big Switch exclusive to release this year, Nintendo has been promoting it heavily, showcasing extended gameplay footage at Tokyo Game Show 2020, and releasing some new screenshots highlighting the various playable characters.

The latest batch of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity screenshots focuses on Goron Champion Daruk. They show some basic artwork for the character, as well as some action shots. In one image, Daruk appears to be wielding some kind of hammer or axe, and he’s using it to fight a golem-like monster. In another image, Daruk is using what appears to be an energy shield, which should help players block incoming attacks.

While Daruk is the focus of the new Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity screenshots, other playable characters have been featured recently as well. Perhaps the most notable is young Impa, whose appearance in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was met with much fanfare over the Tokyo Game Show 2020 weekend. Other playable characters include Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa, and if the first Hyrule Warriors is anything to go by, it’s likely that even more will be revealed between now and when the game launches.

With just a couple of months to go until Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity‘s release date, it’s unclear when exactly Nintendo will reveal more about the game. There’s still a lot of unanswered questions, particularly in regards to the available game modes and full roster of playable characters, so hopefully more information comes sooner rather than later. Sometimes Nintendo hosts dedicated Nintendo Direct presentations for its big game releases, so maybe something like that is in the cards between now and November 20.

When Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity does release, it will be interesting to see how it’s received by fans. The Dynasty Warriors-style of gameplay is certainly not for everyone, and so some fans going in hoping for a more Breath of the Wild-style experience could end up being disappointed.

While Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity isn’t looking to feature the same kind of open world gameplay found in Breath of the Wild, fans should rest assured knowing that there is still plenty of main series Zelda content on the way. In fact, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is deep in development for the Nintendo Switch, so hopefully fans can see it again soon.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches November 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
