Scarlet Nexus Gets New Story Trailer and Playable Character

Whenever a new IP is introduced, it can be difficult to pinpoint what to expect. So when Bandai Namco announced Scarlet Nexus, players were intrigued, if apprehensive.

Everything shown for Scarlet Nexus indicates that it is a science-fiction action game. All trailers and gameplay so far puts emphasis on flashy swordplay and energy attacks. The art style is reminiscent of Astral Chain, with an anime inspired look and distinctive, psychidelic-techno theme. Bandai Namco has since revealed more about what to expect in terms of gameplay, and recently dropped more info about the characters and story.

The world premiere trailer for Scarlet Nexus opened up at Gamescom, and while flashy, players wondered what the game was about. That question has been somewhat answered now. According to Bandai Namco, the game takes place after genes that grant humans psionic powers have been discovered. Those possessing the genes are psychics, and soon after their discovery, problems start. Mutants known as “The Others” descend on the world, hungry for brains and immune to conventional weaponry. Some of this is shown off in the new trailer that was dropped for the game at the Tokyo Game Show.

While the previous trailer for Scarlet Nexus showed off gameplay, this one focuses a bit more on the story. The main character squad is shown off, including the playable characters. One, protagonist Yuito, is seen clashing against another psychic in a battle of telephone poles. Also shown is Kasane, the other playable character. Orphaned by the Others, she was raised by a powerful family and eventually became a super soldier. This is the fate of most psychics in Scarlet Nexus, as they are the only ones who can fight the Others.

Other new characters are shown off as well. Team member Gemma is shown using his specialized Hardening skill, a psychic power focused on defending the team. He, along with other members of the game’s Other Suppression Force, were first shown in new artwork for Scarlet Nexus. The Others also get some love, and they’re quite the show. The enemy design of the game is diverse and grotesque, like something out of a Persona or Shin Megami Tensei title.

The environments are just as bizarre as the enemies. Strange towers rising in the midst of cityscapes, and floating rubble becomes battlefields. Bandai Namco has described the world as “Brainpunk”, but what exactly that entails will not be known until the game is fully realized. Perhaps it will feature brain-trotting adventure similar to something like Psychonauts.

Scarlet Nexus is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
