While a huge portion of the world’s population plays video games, there will always be some who dislike the hobby or think it’s flat-out harmful. One Sea of Thieves Twitch streamer and his wife were kicked out of the wife’s mother’s home because she believes the pirate-themed game is “evil” and doesn’t want its presence in her home.
Sea of Thieves has seen a rise in popularity recently, and the beginning of summer this year saw over 3 million players in one month. A new update for Sea of Thieves recently introduced some player-requested elements like the Black Market, dogs, and even more quests. Over 15 million people have played the game since launch, yet some people will just not be fans, and Twitch streamer Hitbotc’s mother-in-law is one of them.
The Twitch partnered streamer mostly streams Sea of Thieves, and has gained his 40,000+ followers, largely due to his focus on the high seas adventure game. He explains in a “Just Chatting” video that he and his wife moved to Oklahoma, and during the moving transition, the streamer’s MIL offered to let them live with her as Hitbotc and his wife saved for the house they were planning on building. While all seemed to be going well with his in-law at first, she sat her daughter and her husband down to give them some serious news.
In her own words, Hitbotc’s mother-in-law holds the belief that Sea of Thieves is a “demonic game” that she doesn’t want to have played in her house, so she would no longer allow Hitbotc and his wife to live with her if the streams continued. While it’s true that Sea of Thieves focuses on cutthroat pirates, players will notice that the words “devil” and “demon” only appear in the game as names of items and enemies, and players can’t play as or summon demonic entities.
Hitbotc’s followers expressed their condolences for him and his wife losing their home, especially during the difficult time of saving up money to afford their own place to live. Some commentators jokingly volunteered their own houses for the streamer and his wife to live in, while others recommended other games that Hitbotc could stream instead of Sea of Thieves if that mollified his MIL. It looks like the recently added dancing dogs in Sea of Thieves don’t outweigh the criminal elements of the game in some people’s minds.
Even if the game doesn’t please everybody’s sensibilities, plenty of other people enjoy playing as a pirate on the high seas, and with Sea of Thieves being more accessible thanks to new options recently added, the player base looks pretty solid as it is.
