Xbox Series X OS Uses A Lot of Storage Space | Game Rant

There is plenty of anticipation surrounding the release of the Xbox Series X. The new Xbox console has already boasted impressive specs that allow the system to run games at 120 frames per second and it seems to be targeting an audience that wants a top end game system without splashing out for a PC. While power and specs are undoubtedly important, many are also interested in the operating system of the console and it seems that a lot of the storage in the console will be dedicated to this feature.

Operating systems are important as they directly impact how players access applications and with this in mind, many have been interested in how Xbox will improve in the next generation of consoles. While the OS of Xbox consoles is constantly updated, many expect the new console to revamp the menu system. This redesign looks set to appear in the next-generation but it will come at a significant cost to the storage capacity of the console. Nonetheless, the storage space as a whole is still considerable.

Twitter user and YouTube celebrity JorClawstrider released screenshots about the storage that the Xbox Series X OS would require. While the YouTuber is usually known for content and news surrounding upcoming RPG games, many believe the images to be legitimate as it is supported by a report from IGN. The YouTuber drew attention to the fact that 200 GB of the 1TB of storage in the console will be taken up by the operating system. Speaking more broadly they noted that the PlayStation 5, which has smaller storage overall, would also have “like 650 free space.”

The YouTuber noted that with 4K games that the consoles maybe only to hold four AAA titles. While this could well be the case for the next-generation consoles, comments did point out logical ways around this issue. Several comments noted that players could use a USB drive to store games that they are not currently playing and use the technology to rotate their roster. This does seem like a simple fix to the issue, although some will feel that the next generation of consoles should be able to do all this without external storage.

There is plenty of anticipation for how the Xbox Series X will improve its OS, but with that excitement there are concerns. Whether any of the next-generation consoles will be able to please players on all fronts remains to be seen but storage may be an issue for all of the new systems.

Xbox Series X launches on November 10, 2020.
