For some parts of the some parts of the world, the seasonal changes are a reason to celebrate. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important Chinese holidays and is observed around the Sinosphere. To mark the occasion, Nintendo Hong Kong has issued two official QR codes for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players that allow them to design hats that look like delicious mooncakes.
The mooncake hats come in two flavors, so to speak. There is one with Tom Nook’s face and another that has the Leaf logo of the Animal Crossing series. Nintendo Hong Kong released codes for both of the hats along with a preview of what they look like. Mooncake is a traditional treat eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival and is considered an integral part of the celebration; it is even sometimes called the Mooncake Festival. Mooncakes are a rich pastry with a thick filling of red bean or lotus seed paste encased in a thin crust. It is eaten in small wedges and pairs nicely with tea.
In order to take advantage of these codes, and customize their Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience, players will need to unlock the Able Sisters shop. Once this building is made available, players can not only shop for new clothing items but also share custom designs or use codes to use designs others have shared through the Custom Design Portal. It does require an Internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, however. There have been countless creative designs put into the game by equally creative players. Some of them are wholly original, while others try to replicate iconic costumes from popular media like anime.
Since the game launched in March, it has taken the world by storm. This is due, in part, by the fact that fans have been anticipating the next entry in the series for a while but also because its release timed perfectly to the beginning of the quarantine during the worldwide pandemic. A lot of people were indoors, and needed a way to pass the time and take their minds off the situation. Animal Crossing was the solution for many and it showed with the massive amount of units the game sold.
Recently, Tokyo Game Show 2020 wrapped its annual event. The show had moved completely online but was able to do much of the same, showing off new trailers and gameplay of upcoming games. During the event, Animal Crossing: New Horizons won Game of the Year. The judges at Tokyo Game Show agreed that the title should win due to its gameplay, overall charm, and its ability to provide comfort to people working through this difficult time.
