Fans Are Remaking Warcraft 2 in Warcraft 3: Reforged | Game Rant

Many people in the fan community are aware that Warcraft 3: Reforged was largely unpopular when it came out at the beginning of this year, enough so that some fans demanded refunds from Blizzard. Some modders and fan creators are taking it upon themselves to improve the game by turning in into Warcraft 2 instead.

Even though Warcraft 3: Reforged was strongly disliked by both critics and fans, some fans are volunteering to spend more time with the negatively reviewed game to make it into a game that was very popular when released in 1995: Warcraft 2. The more recently-released game in the franchise holds a measly 0.6 in fan ratings on Metacritic, even worse than purposefully review-bombed games like The Last of Us 2.

The modders are bringing new unit models and lore, among other things, in a project entitled Chronicles of the Second War. A post on the Icy Veins Forums claims that Warcraft 3: Reforged was always intended to allow for mod remakes of older games, but that hasn’t been addressed so much this year thanks to the Warcraft 3: Reforged controversy at launch. This Warcraft 2 game is already in testing with a few missions available and a trailer that players can watch and watch for themselves to see if the modded game will be worth playing.

There are some differences between the original Warcraft 2 and the remake (besides the graphics), and those include the campaign chronology and the addition of Warcraft 3 mechanics like sidequests and creeps. This isn’t the first Warcraft 3 mod that’s attempted to turn the game into another game entirely. Not long after Warcraft 3‘s launch, another modder took it upon themselves to rework the game into a third person RPG akin to the similarly-named World of Warcraft.

The creators say themselves that they’ve taken a herculean task upon themselves, and that they’ll need resources and time until the project is at completion and ready to play. Some people have contributed donations to help compensate the modders for their time, although like most modders, these creators are doing all this work largely for free, driven by a passion to improve the game. This is a stark contrast to the Blizzard president’s support of Warcraft 3, and just goes to show that sometimes it’s the modding communities who make games as enjoyable as they are.

The team doesn’t yet have a release date planned for the completed project, which is understandable given that it’s run by volunteers. However, the first four missions are currently downloadable at HiveWorkshop for players who want to experience the mod as it is.

Warcraft 3: Reforged is available now on PC.
