Kingdom Hearts: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Sora | Game Rant

Sora is the main protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts games. Ever since the original game, he has defeated countless heartless, traveled to different worlds based on Disney films, and saved his friends from darkness. Many Kingdom Hearts characters have become fan favorites due to their interactions and complex character arcs. Throughout the years, Sora continues to be a favorite in many fans’ hearts.

However, there are a lot of things about Sora that many players may not know about. How was he created and developed into the hero he is today? What are some scrapped concepts around him that Square Enix decided not to go through with? Here are 10 things that even the biggest fans may not know about Sora.

10 He Almost Didn’t Exist

In the early days of working on Kingdom Hearts, Square (which had not yet joined with Enix) and Disney disagreed on who the main character should be. Square wanted Mickey Mouse to be the playable character while Disney wanted the game to revolve around Donald Duck. Tetsuya Nomura ended up creating Sora and both companies approved of him being the star of the show. The game’s popularity proved that he was a good choice. However, the final design of Sora was not the first one that Nomura had created.

9 An Earlier Design

Originally, Sora looked very different and was not meant to wield the keyblade. He was a mix between a human and a lion. He had claws and a tail, and also wore a crown and used a chainsaw as his weapon. As time went by, Nomura drew Sora with features of a lion until he became fully human. The franchise probably would not have been as successful if Donald and Goofy became friends with a lion using a chainsaw. Though, Sora would become a lion again when he went to the Pride Lands in Kingdom Hearts II.

8 Disney Castle

One of the most popular Disney worlds in the series is Disney Castle, which has also been called Disney Town in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Timeless River when going back in time. This world is the home of King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and other characters that have played a significant role in the franchise.

In the first trailer of the original game, players were able to go to Disney Castle. However, Sora would not actually go there until Kingdom Hearts II. The world did remain in the world map of the game but players were not able to visit it.

7 Sora Was Always Meant To Be Saved

Another concept shown in the first trailer of the first game that was scrapped was that Sora needed to be saved. Near the end of the trailer, Sora is seen facing Riku and quotes from various characters appear on the screen. Though there was no voice acting in the trailer, fans can likely guess who said what. The quotes read: “That’s right, Sora. Your body, your soul, your whole existence… they’re all going to disappear!”, “Come on, guys! We’ve got to save Sora!”, and “Please, Sora… Don’t go.” Those that played Kingdom Hearts III know that Sora is now in need of saving, which is what upcoming games are going to focus on.

6 Height, Age, & Birthday

Some things about Sora that fans may have never thought of are his height, age, and birthday. In the manual for the original game, Sora and Kairi were revealed to be 14 years old while Riku is 15. At this point in the series, Sora would either be around 16, depending on how much time has passed between Kingdom Hearts II, where he was 15, and the Kingdom Hearts III: ReMind DLC. Nomura has also revealed that Sora is 160 centimeters, which is nearly 5’3, and that his birthday is on March 28, the same day that Kingdom Hearts was first released in Japan.

5 He Forgot Tarzan

In the first game, Sora, Donald, and Goofy traveled to Deep Jungle, the world that Tarzan, Jane, and Clayton lived. Due to copyright, Deep Jungle and those that lived there never appeared in the series again. In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sora went to the worlds and saw the friends from his memories. Deep Jungle was not a world that Sora visited, meaning that he had forgotten that part of his journey, as well as the first time he killed a person, as his fight with Clayton was more gruesome than most battles with Disney boss fights.

4 He Has A Father

Many Kingdom Hearts fans make jokes about Sora’s mother. When he leaves his home on Destiny Islands, she calls for him to have dinner and has not been mentioned since.

Like his mother, Sora’s father has never been seen and most are not aware that he has been mentioned. In Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Riku tells Terra that Sora’s father brought them to the island that they play on. Neither of his parents have been referenced since but that doesn’t stop fans from wanting Sora to eat his dinner.

3 His Gazing Eye

The Gazing Eye is the eye that appears on multiple keyblades throughout the franchise. It belongs to the Master of Masters, who put his eye into his keyblade and passed it down to Luxu so that he could see the future and write the Book of Prophecies. In the Limit Cut Episode of the Kingdom Hearts III: ReMind DLCfans can fight Young Xehanort again. If players take out the Gummiphone at the right time and set it so Sora will take a selfie, they can see that he has the Gazing Eye for a split second. This could be a sign that Sora is the Master of Masters.

2 Disney Owns Sora

Due to Kingdom Hearts being a crossover between Disney and Square Enix, fans often debate over who owns what. All of the characters in Kingdom Hearts that are not originally from a Square Enix property belong to Disney. However, Disney allows Square Enix and Tetsuya Nomura to use the characters as they please. This is why Sora has been shown in more Square Enix properties than Disney properties. If fans have any doubts, they can check official Kingdom Hearts merchandise. The Disney logo always appears on merch while the Square Enix logo may not.

1 He Is Still The Main Character

Despite the end of Kingdom Hearts III showing Sora disappear, Nomura has confirmed that he is still the main character of the franchise. Though he may not be in the spotlight for Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road or Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, Sora is still an important character and will make a grand return. Roxas was the main character of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, the Wayfinder Trio were the playable characters in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, and there are games that Sora isn’t even referenced in while still being the main character of the overall series. As he said in the opening lines of Kingdom Hearts III, “every step forward will always be a step closer to home”, and come home he shall.
