Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is nearing the end of development, and with the Alpha and upcoming Beta cycling through, fans have several expectations with guns. As a shooter, the choice of weapons in each of the Call of Duty releases helps define the gameplay and historical perspective. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War set in the past, there are several historical staples that fans are expecting in the upcoming title.
A large percentage of Call of Duty fans are gun enthusiasts that hold knowledge about weapons from historical eras. While many players are more interested in the stats, there are several guns that need to be in the upcoming title regardless. While many will most likely fall out of the game’s meta, there will still be a group of fans who are happy to see historically relevant weapons in their proper time period.
Each release of Call of Duty includes a standard arrangement of weapon categories. In each category, there is a scattered arrangement of varying weapons ranging from familiar favorites to new options. With Black Ops Cold War traveling back to a rather famous period in history, there is a huge opportunity for famous era weapons to make an appearance in the upcoming game.
When thinking of the Cold War-era, many players are reminded of Vietnam, Soviet and U.S. Spys, and the Nuclear Standoff. Mingled in these thoughts are a set of core weapons that most players expect to be in a game from this era.
The AK-47 and M16 rifles tend to take center stage when discussing the 1960s weaponry. The iconic rifles were used prominently in Vietnam with many images from the war displaying them as “standard gear.” The U.S. army mass deployed the M16 due to its durability and easy manufacturing, as it is historically one of the first guns that used cheap plastics in its build making both lightweight and replaceable. As for the AK-47, this rifle has proven itself almost impossible to jam in most situations. Used primarily by the Viet Bong in the Vietnam war, this rifle has become a staple of the era.
Moving forward to the 1980s, the height of the Cold War, many history fans will find that guns had not advanced that far. While the M16 is still a mainstay of the U.S. military, the Colt M1911 handgun has found itself a place as the primary sidearm of U.S. troops. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War have a heavy focus on CIA operations, many fans are expecting the Walther P38 to be making an appearance as well. Both the Walther P38 and Luger P08 were standard issue for CIA operations during the Cold War era.
While historical reference drives a large part of the weapon selection in the upcoming game, many fans are expecting Call of Duty standards to still appear. The M1 Garand, Mp5, and Grease Gun are all weapons that have appeared in previous titles that many fans are hoping will continue to thrive in Call of Duty.
Realistically, fans will most likely see the return of the M1014 which is very similar to a Remington model which would be accurate to the area. The SPAS-12, W1200, and Olympia are also expected shotguns for the series due to their appearance in several other games. Two confirmed rifles that many fans expected to make the jump at the RPD and Stoner 63. Both of these LMGs pack a massive fire rate and high damage and have been fan favorites in the past. Although they did not have much use during the Cold War era, they still serve as good foundations for the LMG slot in the upcoming title.
Many assumptions are made regarding historical rifles and franchise favorites, but Sniper Rifles are one type of gun that fans have a lot to say about. While many fans are requesting that the Type 15 AR, Type 36 Tactical Rifle, and Type 821 make an appearance, fan voice has been much louder about the upcoming Sniper Rifle options. One Sniper Rifle that has been requested multiple times if the Pellington 703. This is known notoriously as the “quick-scope rifle” that gives strong handling alongside a massive one-hit kill potential. It has been several games since fans have had access to this rifle, making it quickly rise to the top of fan requests.
Another rifle that has been requested multiple times is the SKS Marksman Rifle. This rifle has had limited performance in the Call of Duty franchise but did make an appearance in Modern Warfare Season 3. This semi-auto rifle is chambered with 7.62 Soviet ammunition and is more of a utility rifle than anything else. The gun sports two-shot kills and has seen a diverse set of battles since its creation.
The last requested weapon, and most recently confirmed, is the XM4 which is the rifle that Frank Woods carries throughout the Black Ops series. Standing in as the Black Ops version of the M4A1, this rifle is a fan favorite simply because Frank Woods uses it. Although it is a decent Assault Rifle it is not known for anything in particular. Multiple appearances grant it a rather generic balance which shifts fan focus directly to its famed user.
There are sure to be tons of weapons and varying equipment opportunities in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Many fans are expecting the game to follow the Season formula seen in Modern Warfare, which would mean additional weapons are sure to appear throughout the game’s lifespan. While some fan-favorite and expected weapons are sure to make the cut, others may be reserved explicitly for seasonal release later next year. Still, as long as Black Ops Cold War stays true to its main design and the weapons stay within reasonability for the era fans are sure to enjoy the title. New weapons are always fun, but many players are expecting this title to be a blast into the past.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release on PC, PS4, Ps5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on November 13th.
