Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is Having The Second-Best Switch Game Launch

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is off to an amazing start. According to a recent report, the 3D Mario collection is enjoying the second-best launch of any Switch title thus far, behind only Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which recently won Game of the Year at TGS.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a celebration of the 35-year anniversary of Super Mario. The game comes packed with Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Although some were hoping for a bit more pizzazz with the game, as opposed to being basically ports of the originals, 3D All-Stars is enjoying both critical and sales success.

M Science is a research and analytics firm, driven by data. It recently reported on the launch sale of Super Mario 3D All-Stars compared it to other Switch titles. The data is designed to only look at the first four days after launch, and the results show that 3D All-Stars is behind only New Horizons, while beating out the likes of Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey. And even as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate became the fastest-selling Switch game when it launched, 3D All-Stars has outpaced it by 70%.

A part of the success of the game is likely attributed to Super Mario 3D All-Stars’ limited availability, as the game will only be sold through March 2021. The simple premise of supply and demand could be helping to spike the numbers a bit, as Mario fans and Nintendo collection enthusiasts likely don’t want to miss out on the game completely.

The sales data is not overly surprising, as 3D All-Stars has been sold out multiple times in various regions and retailers. Even before this report was presented, the evidence was pointing to the fact that the game was selling very well. It will be very interesting to see how the game stacks up against the likes of the 22 million-plus units sold of Animal Crossing: New Horizons or 18 million-plus copies of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With the holiday period arriving, and the idea that the game will not be available for much longer, 3D All-Stars could be one of the higher selling games over the next few months.

Nintendo’s strategy to sell Super Mario 3D All-Stars as a limited run is not normal for the company. The reasoning for this choice is not known yet, and perhaps it will always remain a mystery. But it is possible that Nintendo will sell the collection again at some point, especially after the sales success.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is available now for Nintendo Switch.
