Discord has seen a huge spike in downloads recently, hitting a lifetime high for daily installs every single day since September 5. The massive download numbers are due in part to one of the surprise video game success stories of the year, Among Us.
According to Apptopia (a service that provides app intelligence data), Discord has reached new heights in unique user downloads since Among Us took off in popularity. Discord has steadily increased in downloads since 2015, as the chatting and VoIP application is a great choice for communication in gaming. But even as it saw a boost when the pandemic initially hit, it has never seen a climb like it has since Among Us blew up.
Among Us has been reached 74 million downloads since August 1, after being a very little known title for almost two years as it released in 2018. The whodunit survival game uses an in-game chat to communicate, which is generally effective. In-between rounds, players must converse about the actions of the round, who they think could be the imposter, and then vote on whether or not to kick someone out. While the text version of chat works fine, using voice communication adds to the fun of Among Us, as well as efficiency of communication, which is where Discord comes in.
The article by Apptopia also claims that Among Us made 4.5 million via in-app purchases over this same period, which doesn’t include the $5 price of the game on Steam. The massive download amounts and sales success of the game is probably part of the reason InnerSloth has chosen to not make a sequel to Among Us. Initially, the developer had announced that a follow-up was in development, but it has since shifted gears into solely supporting the original and now ridiculously successful Among Us.
Among Us is now available on PC and mobile devices.
