The Overwatch League has many official teams participating in the league bracket including Boston’s Boston Uprising. In a recent promotion to get fans of Boston Uprising who don’t own Overwatch to play the game, the team recently gave away free copies of Overwatch to its fans.
While initially seen as a good idea, the number of people claiming the prize grew to far more than what Boston Uprising had expected. This was due to people sharing the form that allowed people to claim their free copy of Overwatch and spreading it beyond the Boston Uprising fanbase.
Because of the large influx of people claiming a free copy of Overwatch, the giveaway was shut down with the promotion page stating as such. The form with the promotion was originally meant to stay up until January 15, 2021, so it was cut extremely short.
It is unknown how many copies were claimed before the form shut down, but it clearly had to be a lot with how fast the plug was pulled. According to PCGamesN, the Boston Uprising community manager Matthew Shiftlet spoke on the situation in the official Boston Uprising Discord server.
Shiftlet’s Discord post revealed that the deactivation of the form was intentional and that nobody inside or outside of Boston Uprising knows if the form will return at any point in the future. He additionally stated that the entire incident is a learning experience as nobody had done a giveaway like this in Overwatch history before.
The Overwatch League will continue to be active with the Grand Finals Weekend of the Overwatch League 2020 Playoffs running from October 8th, 2020 to October 10th, 2020. Boston Uprising will not be participating in the Grand Finals Weekend due to their loss against Atlanta Reign back on September 4th during Round 2 of the playoffs. Their fans, however, will remain active and likely support them as they wait for future giveaways.
If Boston Uprising were to host another giveaway, whether it be free copies of Overwatch or other prizes, it likely will be better handled to prevent this situation from happening again. It is also unknown if other teams from the Overwatch League will follow suit and create giveaways while also learning from the mistakes of Boston Uprising. The giveaway at least has the upside of those who had properly claimed their prizes being able to get their free copies of Overwatch.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
