It’s been 25 years since cult classic Hackers arrived in theaters and changed pop-culture’s view of what it meant to be internet savvy. Though the film was criticized for its cheesy plot and rather unrealistic view of hacking, the stylish visuals and high energy presentation has made the film a cult classic that endures long beyond its moment in time. In fact, its legacy has been so powerful and lasting that director Iain Softley is still asked to discuss the film regularly, and even has a few ideas for a continuation.
Softely discussed how, from the fans and even behind the scenes, there have long been voices pushing for more dives into the world of Hackers. “There are certain cast members, certainly the guys who work with Chris Nolan, DNEG, they’re approached all the time about, ‘Why isn’t there [more Hackers]?’ And on the internet, on Twitter and social media, people are asking about that possibility. So, it’s being explored.” He didn’t have much to say about exactly what form this hypothetical continuation would take, however.
For those who are still feeling cynical about the sheer number of reboots, revivals, and re-inventions cranked out these days, Softely promised that this was all coming from a place of genuine care for the IP. “I don’t think any of us would want to do it unless we thought it was worthwhile to do. We wouldn’t do it as just a commercial exercise. But there has been interest, from kind of mainstream producers. So it’s something that’s being actively considered for the first time ever, really.” It’s an exciting proposition, taking a movie with cult-hit appeal and seeing it return to modern audiences in a new form, but obviously there’s a lot of potential for missteps as well.
The culture of the internet has shifted greatly since 1995, and there’s a whole new world of online danger and excitement that could make for an interesting setting. A film that grapples with society’s changing relationship to the internet has a lot of different directions it could go, and Softely thinks it may be time to start exploring: “What’s happened now, with big data, and the way that it’s actually broke through and become maybe the dominant force in the world, in terms of influencing politics and finance and elections, that I think there is a call, for the first time ever, that the Knights of the Round Table should be woken up to sort of answer the call again.”
